Fluval Aquaclear Intake Strainer Sponge AC20/30/50

The pre-filter sponge that slips over the AquaClear AC20, AC30 and AC50 intake tube – genuine Fluval item 19684. It's the first line of defence for fry, shrimp and snails, stopping them being drawn into the intake before water ever reaches the impeller.

Will it fit my filter?

This sponge fits the Fluval AquaClear AC20, AC30 and AC50 intake tubes. It does not fit the AC70 or AC110 – those use a larger-diameter strainer sponge sold as a separate part. Check the intake tube diameter against your model before ordering.

Specifications
Spec Detail
Fluval item number 19684
Fits AquaClear AC20, AC30, AC50 intake tubes
Function Mechanical pre-filter over the intake, protects fry, shrimp and snails from the impeller
What's included
  • One intake strainer sponge
Care and maintenance

Rinse in removed tank water whenever flow noticeably slows – a clogged intake sponge is one of the most common causes of a "weak" AquaClear that turns out to have a perfectly good motor. Replace once it no longer holds its shape after rinsing.

Safety

Unplug the filter before removing or fitting the intake tube.

Common questions

Do I need this if I don't keep fry or shrimp?

It's optional without vulnerable livestock, but it also catches coarse debris before it reaches the impeller, which reduces impeller wear either way.

Will this fit my AC70?

No – the AC70 and AC110 use a wider intake tube and a separate, larger strainer sponge.

How often should it be replaced?

Rinse it at each filter clean and replace once it's torn, thinned, or no longer restores flow after rinsing – there's no fixed interval published by Fluval, so let condition be the guide rather than a calendar date.
