Fluval Plant 3.0 LED
Bluetooth-controlled, full-spectrum LED lighting built for growing plants, not just lighting a tank. The Fluval Plant 3.0 LED range mixes six diode colours to cover the plant-growth spectrum, with app control for sunrise, sunset and cloud effects, across three sizes to suit tanks from about 61 cm up to 145 cm.
All three sizes share the same six-diode mix – a blend of 3000K, 6500K and 15000K whites plus pink and blue-spectrum diodes – scaled up in LED count as the fixture gets longer. Control is via Bluetooth and the free FluvalSmart app rather than Wi-Fi, so there's no home network dependency, and the fixture also works with a basic mechanical timer if you'd rather skip the app.
Key features
- Full plant-growth spectrum – 3000K, 6500K and 15000K white diodes plus dedicated pink and blue diodes, tuned for photosynthesis rather than pure aesthetics.
- Bluetooth app control – Manual, Auto and Pro modes via the FluvalSmart app; Auto mode runs a 24-hour gradual sunrise/midday/sunset/night cycle.
- IP67 rated – safe to mount directly above the water surface, splash resistant.
- Adjustable rim mounting – extendable plastic legs rest on the tank rim and adjust to width; separate mounting clips and a suspension kit are available for other install types.
- Three sizes, one spectrum – the light recipe doesn't change as you go up in size, only the coverage.

Performance at depth – PAR
Fluval publishes a PAR-at-depth chart for the 32 W and 59 W fixtures. A chart for the 46 W has not been published by Fluval as of this writing – we've left it out rather than estimating a value between the other two sizes.
| Depth | 32 W – PAR (lux) | 59 W – PAR (lux) |
|---|---|---|
| 8 cm | 453 (28,300 lux) | 545 (32,800 lux) |
| 15 cm | 252 (15,260 lux) | 288 (17,120 lux) |
| 30 cm | 107 (6,330 lux) | 136 (9,350 lux) |
For the 46 W, treat it as sitting between the two published curves in output, but confirm with a PAR meter in-tank if you're running demanding carpeting plants and need a precise number – we won't publish a figure we can't source.
Which one do I need?
Match the fixture length to your tank length first – a fixture that's too short leaves dark ends, and one that's too long overhangs awkwardly. The 32 W suits nano to 2-foot tanks, the 46 W suits most 3-foot tanks, and the 59 W suits 4-foot tanks. If your tank sits between two sizes, size up rather than down – running a slightly oversized light on a lower app-controlled intensity is easier than adding a second fixture later.
Setup and use
Extendable rim brackets adjust to fit tanks within each size's stated range; the fixture pairs over Bluetooth with the FluvalSmart app (roughly 12 m / 40 ft range) for Manual, Auto or Pro lighting modes. Auto mode runs a full 24-hour cycle with gradual sunrise, midday peak, sunset and night phases, plus optional cloud and lightning effects. If you don't want to use the app, the fixture also runs on a basic analog or mechanical timer.
Care and maintenance
No bulb changes – the LEDs are rated for roughly 50,000 hours of use, well beyond the working life of most tank setups. Wipe the underside occasionally to keep light output even, and keep the driver and cable connections dry; the fixture itself is splash-rated but the external power supply is not.
Compatibility, spares and supersession
All three sizes use an external driver as the power supply. The 32 W driver is sold separately as a spare part if the original fails, and is shared between the Plant 3.0 and Marine 3.0 32 W fixtures of the same 61–85 cm size – it is not interchangeable with the 46 W or 59 W drivers.
Suitable for, and not suitable for
Suitable for planted freshwater aquariums wanting a full growth spectrum with programmable cycles. Not designed as a marine/reef light – Fluval sells a separate Marine 3.0 range with a spectrum tuned for coral rather than plants.
Safety
Mains-powered – use on a 240V/50Hz AU-approved outlet, ideally behind an RCD-protected circuit as with any aquarium electrical equipment. IP67 fixture rating covers splash exposure directly above the water; the external driver should be mounted or positioned somewhere it can't get wet or submerged.
Warranty and delivery
General Fluval warranty terms apply to manufacturing defects, in addition to your rights under Australian Consumer Law. Standard parcel freight.
Common questions
Does the 46 W have the same PAR output as the 32 W or 59 W?
Fluval hasn't published a PAR chart for the 46 W specifically, so we can't state an exact figure – expect it to fall between the 32 W and 59 W results based on its position in the range, but confirm with a meter if you need precision for demanding plants.
Can I run this over a reef tank?
It's built and spectrum-tuned for plants, not coral. Fluval's Marine 3.0 range is the equivalent light for reef and marine setups.
Does it need Wi-Fi to work?
No – control is Bluetooth-only via the FluvalSmart app, or you can skip the app entirely and run it on a basic timer.
What happens if the driver fails?
The driver is a separate, replaceable part rather than something you throw the whole fixture out for – see the compatible spare part linked above for the 32 W size.
Is it safe to mount directly above an open-top tank?
Yes – it's IP67 rated for splash exposure in that position, which is the standard mounting method using its rim brackets.
