Frozen Krill Pacifica Flat 454g
Whole krill, one ingredient, in a 454 g slab you break up as you go. Ocean Nutrition Frozen Krill Pacifica is whole Euphausia pacifica – a cold-water Pacific krill of roughly 2.5 cm – flash frozen with nothing added. The declaration is a single item, and the analysis runs 12.2% protein as fed. The flat pack is the bulk format: a 454 g sheet you snap portions from, rather than pre-portioned cubes.
Key features
- One ingredient – krill pacifica and nothing else. No binder, no gelatin, no added colour, no premix.
- Whole animals of around 2.5 cm – this is the single most important number on the page, because it decides which of your fish can actually eat it.
- 12.2% crude protein as fed – close to 76% on a dry-matter basis at 84.0% moisture.
- 454 g flat pack – roughly four and a half times a 100 g blister, for tanks where a blister lasts a week or less.
- Takes large, greedy feeders – the size that suits triggers, large wrasses, lionfish and big cichlids is exactly the size that defeats small-mouthed fish.
- Crustaceans feed on it readily – Ocean Nutrition lists crustaceans alongside marine and freshwater fish.
- Natural carotenoid content – krill is a recognised pigment source. Ocean Nutrition does not publish a figure for it, so none is claimed here.

Will it fit my fish?
Krill Pacifica is a whole animal of about 2.5 cm, and it does not break down into small particles the way a bound cube does. A fish needs a mouth that can take a 2.5 cm item, or the jaw strength to tear one.
| Fish | Takes whole krill at 2.5 cm? |
|---|---|
| Triggers, large wrasses, lionfish, groupers, large angels | Yes, whole and easily |
| Medium cichlids, larger tangs, foxface, larger clowns | Yes, often after tearing it |
| Small clowns, cardinals, chromis, most gobies | Only if chopped; a whole krill is too large |
| Seahorses, pipefish, mandarins, small blennies, fry | No – use frozen mysis at around 1 cm instead |
Chopping thawed krill with a knife works and is common practice, but it is extra handling at every feed. If most of your stock is in the bottom two rows, buy the mysis.
Feeding directions
Ocean Nutrition's published directions are to feed two to five times a day, and to feed only the amount the fish will consume within five minutes.
- Break or snap a portion off the frozen slab. Return the remainder to the freezer immediately – do not let the whole pack soften.
- Thaw the portion in a small cup of tank water for a few minutes, then pour it through a fine net and rinse if you want to keep the pack liquid out of the tank.
- Feed the rinsed krill into flow so it distributes rather than piling up in one spot.
- Remove anything uneaten after five minutes. Whole krill left in the sand is a common and avoidable nitrate source.
Ocean Nutrition does not publish thawing directions for the flat pack format, so the method above is our own standard practice for whole-animal frozen foods rather than a manufacturer instruction.
Which Ocean Nutrition frozen food do I need?
Protein figures below are as fed, from each product's own published analysis.
| Food | Crude protein (as fed) | Built for | Particle |

| Formula One | 14.5% | Carnivorous and omnivorous marine fish | Bound cube |
| Formula Two | 12.0% | Herbivorous and omnivorous grazers | Bound cube |
| Krill Pacifica | 12.2% | Larger fish and crustaceans | Whole krill, around 2.5 cm |
| Mysis | 11.1% | Small-mouthed carnivores and seahorses | Whole mysis, around 1 cm |
| Marine Quintet | 9.0% | Mixed communities and varied mouth sizes | Five-item mix |
| Angel Formula | 11.0% | Sponge-eating angels and butterflies | Bound cube |
Suitable for, and not suitable for
Suitable for
- Larger marine and freshwater carnivores, as listed by Ocean Nutrition for both water types.
- Crustaceans, including larger shrimp and hermit crabs.
- Predatory freshwater fish such as large cichlids, oscars and archerfish.
- Keepers who want a single-ingredient food with no premix, binder or added colour.
Not suitable for
- Seahorses, pipefish, mandarins and other small-mouthed specialists – the animals are far too large.
- Strict herbivores as a diet. Tangs and rabbitfish will eat krill happily, but they need the algae in Formula Two or a dried algae sheet.
- A complete sole diet. A single-ingredient food carries no added vitamin or mineral premix, so rotate it with a formulated food.
- Small tanks where 454 g will sit in the freezer for many months. The 100 g blister is the better format.
Storage and cold chain
- Keep frozen in a domestic freezer. Reseal the pack or bag it, as an open flat pack picks up freezer burn faster than a sealed blister.
- Do not refreeze krill that has fully thawed. Discard it.
- Snap off what you need while the slab is hard. Letting the whole pack soften and refreezing it fuses it into one block you then have to chisel.
Goes well with
- Frozen Mysis Flat 454g – the small-particle counterpart, so one tank can feed both large and small mouths.
- Frozen Formula One 100g – a formulated diet with a full vitamin premix, to rotate against this single-ingredient food.
- Frozen Nutris Krill Pacifica 100g – the same krill in a smaller pack, if the flat is more than your tank will get through.
- Frozen Whole Krill Superba 100g – the larger Antarctic krill species, for fish that take a bigger item still.
Warranty and delivery
Frozen foods are a consumable and carry no manufacturer warranty period. Your rights under the Australian Consumer Law apply in full and are in addition to anything stated here, including the guarantee that goods are of acceptable quality and fit for their stated purpose.
Frozen food is pick up only from our North Lakes store, because a pack that thaws on the way cannot be refrozen.
Common questions
How big are the krill in Ocean Nutrition Krill Pacifica?
They are whole Euphausia pacifica of approximately 2.5 cm. That is large enough that small-mouthed fish such as cardinals and most gobies cannot take one whole, and it is the main reason to choose mysis instead.
What is the difference between Krill Pacifica and Krill Superba?
They are two different species. Pacifica is the smaller cold-water Pacific krill at around 2.5 cm; Superba is the larger Antarctic species. Choose by the mouth size of the fish you are feeding rather than by protein figure.
Do I need to thaw and rinse frozen krill before feeding?
Thawing makes portioning easier and lets you rinse off the pack liquid, which reduces the dissolved nutrient load entering the tank. Ocean Nutrition does not publish thawing directions for the flat pack, so treat rinsing as good practice rather than a required step.
Can I feed Krill Pacifica as my only food?
It is not the best sole diet. The declaration is a single ingredient with no added vitamin or mineral premix, so rotate it with a formulated food such as Formula One that carries a full premix.
Is the flat pack better value than the blister?
Only if you will use it. A 454 g flat pack suits a heavily stocked or large tank; in a small tank the same pack can sit in the freezer long enough to develop freezer burn, and a 100 g blister is the better buy.
Will Krill Pacifica stain my water?
The pack liquid carries carotenoid pigment and can tint the water briefly if the whole portion is tipped in unrinsed. Thawing in a cup and pouring through a fine net avoids it entirely.
