Habistat Heat Mat
Even background warmth, controlled by your own thermostat. The HabiStat Heat Mat is a low-wattage, flexible heating panel that sits under or beside a reptile or invertebrate enclosure to provide gentle, even background heat. It's sold in three sizes – 4 W, 7 W and 12 W – and, like every heat mat, it must be run through a thermostat rather than plugged straight into the wall.
Key features
- Even, low-level heat – spreads warmth across the whole mat surface rather than one hot point, unlike a spot lamp.
- Three sizes to match your enclosure – 10.2 x 12.7 cm (4 W), 15 x 28 cm (7 W) and 28 x 28 cm (12 W).
- Suited to belly heat, not basking – use it for species that thermoregulate from a warm floor or wall rather than a bright basking spot.
- Works with on/off and pulse-proportional thermostats – pairs with a HabiStat Mat Stat or Pulse Proportional Thermostat.

Which size do I need?
Match the mat to roughly a third of the enclosure floor, positioned at one end so the animal can move off the heat – never cover the whole floor with a mat. The 4 W mat suits small enclosures for hatchlings, inverts and small geckos; the 7 W mat suits a typical adult leopard gecko or similarly sized terrarium; the 12 W mat suits larger floor areas such as bigger snake or lizard enclosures. Where one mat wouldn't cover a third of the floor, two smaller mats on separate thermostats work better than a single oversized mat.
Suitable for, and not suitable for
Suitable for species that thermoregulate from belly or background heat – leopard geckos and other terrestrial geckos, snakes, and invertebrates needing gentle warmth.
Not suitable as the sole heat source for species that need a basking spot with visible light, such as bearded dragons or most day geckos – pair a mat like this with an appropriate basking lamp for those species rather than relying on the mat alone. Not for submersion or direct contact with standing water.
Safety
Never run a heat mat unregulated. HabiStat Heat Mats must be controlled by a dedicated thermostat – an on/off thermostat (such as the HabiStat Mat Stat, rated to 300 W) or a pulse-proportional thermostat are both suitable for heat mats. HabiStat's dimming thermostats are built primarily for light-emitting heat sources such as ceramic heat emitters and halogen bulbs; check with HabiStat before pairing one with a heat mat rather than assuming it will work.
Fit the thermostat's probe on the mat surface, or the hottest part of the area it heats, not floating in open air, so the reading reflects the heat the animal actually receives. Site the mat where the animal can't dig under loose substrate and lie directly on it for extended periods, and keep it clear of standing water.
Care and maintenance
Check the mat and probe placement periodically – substrate that's compacted or shifted can change how heat reaches the thermostat probe and throw the set temperature off.
Common questions
Do I need a thermostat?
Yes, always. A heat mat run without one has no way to stop overheating.
Can I use a dimming thermostat with a heat mat?
HabiStat markets dimming thermostats for light-emitting heat sources like ceramic heat emitters and halogen bulbs, not specifically for heat mats – use an on/off or pulse-proportional thermostat instead.
Where should I stick the mat?
Underneath or on the outside of an enclosure wall, not inside where the animal has direct, unbroken contact, or where substrate holds moisture against it.
Which size covers my enclosure?
Aim for roughly a third of the floor area at one end – see "Which size do I need?" above.
