Ocean Nutrition frozen micro plankton

A fine plankton blend built for corals and filter feeders, not fish mouths.

Ocean Nutrition Frozen Micro Plankton combines rotifers, cockles and algae (spirulina and chlorella) into a very fine frozen food aimed at corals, sponges, anemones and other filter-feeding invertebrates rather than fish. Sold frozen in a 100 g blister pack.

Key features
  • Rotifers, cockles and algae in one blend — covers animal and algal nutrition in a single feed.
  • Spirulina and chlorella included — microalgae aimed at colour and growth support.
  • Fine particle size — sized for filter feeders and polyps rather than fish mouths.
  • Freshly frozen rotifers — carry highly unsaturated fatty acids (HUFAs) into the feed.
  • Formulated for growth and colour — aimed at supporting coral and invertebrate growth, per the manufacturer.

Suitable for — and not suitable for

Suitable for corals, sponges, anemones and other filter-feeding marine invertebrates, and can supplement the diet of fry and nano fish that take fine particles.

Not suitable as feed for larger predatory or grazing fish — the particle size and nutrient profile are built for filter feeders, not fish.

Feeding directions

The manufacturer's general guidance is 2 to 5 feeds a day. For target-fed corals, a light broadcast directly over the polyps is usually enough rather than a full-tank feed — watch your skimmer output and nutrient levels and scale back if you see a rise.

Thawing, storage and cold chain

Thaw a portion in a small container of aquarium or system water, then dose. Never refreeze thawed food. Keep the unopened pack frozen between uses, and carry it home in an insulated bag on a hot day so it doesn't begin thawing in transit.

Goes well with

Pair with Marine Fish Eggs for another fine-particle option, and use a turkey baster or pipette for target-feeding individual coral heads.

Warranty and delivery

As a frozen perishable food, this product is covered by the consumer guarantees under Australian Consumer Law relating to acceptable quality on arrival, in addition to any manufacturer assurance. It is sold and shipped frozen — keep it cold on the way home and into your freezer promptly.

Common questions

Will this feed my fish too?

Some fine particles will be taken by fry and nano fish, but it's formulated for filter feeders and corals, not as a general fish food.

Can I dose this directly onto my corals?

Yes — many reefkeepers thaw a small amount and target-feed it directly with a pipette or turkey baster.

Will it cause a nutrient spike?

Any added food raises nutrient input — feed conservatively and monitor your system, especially in smaller reef tanks.

What's the difference between this and Marine Fish Eggs?

Micro Plankton is a rotifer, cockle and algae blend aimed at filter feeders and corals; Marine Fish Eggs is pure fish roe aimed more at small fish, shrimp and fry.

Does it include live phytoplankton?

No — the blend includes spirulina and chlorella algae, but it is a frozen product, not a live phytoplankton culture.
