Red Sea Reefer 170 Aquarium Outer Downpipe

The genuine outer downpipe for a Reefer 170's silent overflow. This is Red Sea's factory outer downpipe for the original REEFER 170 (part 42205) — the outer sleeve of the two-pipe Herbie-style overflow that keeps the tank quiet. It is not the G2 version, and it is not interchangeable with the 170 G2's outer downpipe.

Key features
  • Genuine Red Sea part 42205 — factory-correct diameter and length for the REEFER 170 (original/G1) overflow box.
  • Direct-fit replacement — no cutting or adapting, it seats exactly where the original outer downpipe sat.
  • Keeps the silent-overflow design working as engineered — a cracked, warped or missing outer downpipe is a common cause of a suddenly noisy overflow.
Specifications
Part number 42205
Component Outer downpipe (overflow box)
Material Moulded plastic
Fits REEFER 170 (original/G1) only
Will it fit my tank?

This part fits the original REEFER 170 only — not the REEFER 170 G2. Red Sea sells a separate outer downpipe for the G2 overflow, so check which generation you own before ordering. The two look similar but are not interchangeable; fitting the wrong one leaves the overflow either too loud or leaking at the seal.

Suitable for, and not suitable for
  • Suitable for: REEFER 170 owners replacing a cracked, warped or missing outer downpipe.
  • Not suitable for: REEFER 170 G2, or any other REEFER size — the overflow box dimensions differ by model.
Warranty and delivery

Covered against manufacturing defects in addition to your rights under Australian Consumer Law. Standard freight — a compact plumbing part with no special handling requirements.

Common questions

How do I know if I have the original 170 or the 170 G2?

Red Sea sells the REEFER 170 and REEFER 170 G2 as distinct generations with different overflow and plumbing parts. If you're not sure which you own, check your purchase documentation or the model details on your cabinet, or contact us with a photo of the overflow box and we'll help confirm before you order.

What causes a Reefer overflow to go noisy?

Usually a downpipe that's cracked, warped, blocked, or sitting slightly proud of its seated position, which lets air into the siphon. Replacing the outer downpipe with the genuine part restores the original clearance the silent-overflow design relies on.

Can I use a generic pipe instead?

Generic pipe rarely matches the Reefer's exact internal and external diameters, and even a small mismatch breaks the Herbie-style siphon that keeps the overflow quiet. The genuine part is the reliable fix.

Is fitting straightforward?

Yes — it's a direct swap for the existing outer downpipe, no cutting or solvent welding required. Drain the overflow box before removing the old pipe.
