Red Sea Reefer Max 525 G3+

A 540-litre reef system built for a longer run of glass, with a third light and a bigger filter roller to match.

The Red Sea REEFER MAX 525 G3+ takes the same REEFER MAX formula as the rest of the range – lighting, DC return flow, skimming and auto top-off pre-fitted – and scales it to a 150 cm display. Three ReefLED G2 115 units cover the extra length, a larger ReefMat 1200 filter roller handles the bigger bioload, and the 117-litre sump gives more working room for a doser or extra media than the smaller REEFER MAX models.

Key features
  • 150 cm display, three ReefLED G2 115 units – full-length coverage rather than stretching two lights over a longer tank with dark corners.
  • ReefMat 1200 filter roller – a wider roll than the ReefMat 500 fitted to the smaller REEFER MAX models, sized for the extra water volume and feeding load a 540 L system carries.
  • 117-litre sump – more usable chamber space than the 425's 91 L sump, useful if you're planning to add a doser or extra reactor later.
  • ReefRun G2 DC return pump – adjustable through the ReefBeat app rather than a fixed-speed impeller.
  • REEFER DC 600 protein skimmer – fitted in the sump, not a separate hang-on or in-sump purchase.
  • ReefATO+ with leak detection – automatic top-up plus a sensor that watches for a sump leak, not just evaporation.
  • Twin ReefWave gyre pumps – broad gyre-style flow across a longer display, rather than two point-source jets fighting each other.
What's included / Not included

This is the MAX package. The plain REEFER 525 G3+ aquarium and cabinet, sold separately, does not carry any of the equipment below – check which listing you're looking at before you order.

  • 3x ReefLED G2 115 lighting units with mounting arms
  • 2x ReefWave gyre circulation pumps
  • ReefRun G2 DC return pump
  • REEFER DC 600 protein skimmer, fitted in the sump
  • ReefMat 1200 automatic mechanical filter roller
  • ReefATO+ auto top-off system with leak detection
  • Pre-glued sump and internal plumbing
  • ReefBeat app control for the lighting, pump and ATO

Not included:

  • Heater or heating thermostat
  • Calcium, alkalinity or trace element doser

As with the 425, we found conflicting published figures for the exact ReefRun G2 flow rate on this model and have left the number off this page rather than guess between them. Ask in store if you need a specific lift figure.

Which REEFER MAX do I need?

The REEFER MAX range shares the same lighting, pump, skimmer and ATO philosophy across sizes – the difference is display volume and how much gear runs in parallel to cover it.

Model Display volume Total system volume Lighting included
REEFER MAX 425 G3 343 L 433 L 2x ReefLED G2 115
REEFER MAX 525 G3+ 423 L 540 L 3x ReefLED G2 115

The 525 is the 425 stretched to 150 cm rather than a deeper or taller tank – same 55 cm height and 60 cm width, so the same aquascaping habits and equipment reach carry across if you're moving up from the smaller model.

Will it fit my space?

Footprint is 150 x 60 cm – check the run of wall or room length this needs before ordering, since it's 30 cm longer than the 425 on an identical width and height. Allow clearance above the tank for the three ReefLED mounting arms, and behind the cabinet for the ReefBeat control panel and cabling.

How much does it weigh filled, and will my floor take it?

Red Sea states the filled system at 850 kg. Spread evenly over the 150 x 60 cm (0.9 m²) cabinet footprint, that works out to roughly 945 kg/m² – real-world loading concentrates at the cabinet's feet or base rails rather than spreading evenly, so treat this as a guide rather than an engineering figure. For any tank over 200 L on a suspended timber floor, we'd get a builder to check span and load rating before installation. This is our own calculation from the manufacturer's filled weight; Red Sea does not publish a floor-loading rating for this model.

Running costs and noise

All the moving parts on this system – return pump, three lights, two ReefWave pumps and the skimmer – are DC units, which keeps running noise down relative to older AC-driven REEFER generations. We don't have a verified dB or annual kWh figure for the assembled 525 system and won't publish a guess; ask in store and we'll work through the running cost against your tariff.

Suitable for / not suitable for
  • Suitable for: longer mixed reef and FOWLR displays, SPS-capable lighting via the ReefLED spectrum range, reefers upgrading from a 425 or similar who want more length without extra height or depth to manage.
  • Not suitable for: freshwater use as supplied, species needing still water given the combined gyre and return flow, anyone expecting a heater, doser or livestock in the box.
Care and maintenance

The ReefMat 1200 roller needs a fresh roll on a schedule tied to bioload rather than a fixed calendar date – heavier feeding or a bigger fish load will use a roll faster. Check the roll level through the sump viewing panel. Empty and rinse the skimmer cup more often during cycling or after a bioload increase, when skimmate production peaks.

Safety

This is a mains-powered marine system. Run the return pump, lights, ReefWave pumps, skimmer and ATO from a dedicated RCD-protected circuit, drip-loop all power leads below socket height, and keep electrical connections separated from the top-up water path. No heater is included; if you fit one, size it and its thermostat to the full 540 L system volume rather than the display volume alone.

Warranty and delivery

Red Sea backs this system with the manufacturer's standard warranty, in addition to your rights under the Australian Consumer Law – ask in store for the current term. This is an oversize item shipped on a pallet; delivery is kerbside/dock unless local delivery or assembly is arranged, and two people are recommended when lifting the tank onto the cabinet, more so than the 425 given the extra length.

Common questions

What's the difference between the REEFER 525 G3+ and the REEFER MAX 525 G3+?

The plain REEFER 525 G3+ is the aquarium, cabinet and sump only. The MAX package on this page adds the lighting, return pump, skimmer, filter roller and auto top-off, already fitted.

Why three lights instead of two like the 425?

The 525 is 30 cm longer than the 425 at the same width, so a third ReefLED G2 115 is fitted to keep light coverage even along the full length rather than dimming at the ends.

Does the REEFER MAX 525 G3+ include a heater?

No. A heater and matching thermostat aren't part of the MAX package and need to be sized separately to the 540 L total system volume.

Can I run this on a standard Australian power circuit?

Yes – all included equipment is supplied for the Australian market at 240 V / 50 Hz with an Australian plug. With more equipment running than the 425, we'd recommend spreading it across at least two GPOs.

What's not included that I should budget for?

A heater and thermostat, a doser if you're not dosing calcium and alkalinity by hand, and your own live rock, sand and livestock. See the full "not included" list above.
