Red Sea Reefer-S Max 550 G2+

A running reef system, not just a tank to fill. The Red Sea Reefer-S MAX 550 G2+ is the mid-size entry in Red Sea's wide-format Reefer-S range: a 120 x 68 x 65 cm rimless display over a 101 L sump, with twin ReefLED G2 170 lighting units, twin ReefWave 45 gyre pumps, a ReefRun G2 8000 DC return pump, a Red Sea DC Skimmer 600 and a ReefMat 1200 automatic filter roller already fitted and plumbed. It suits a reefer who wants the core hardware matched and installed on a shorter, wider footprint than a standard Reefer of similar volume.

Key features
  • 549 L total system volume — 448 L display over a 101 L sump, on Red Sea's wider, deeper Reefer-S footprint rather than the narrower standard Reefer.
  • Twin ReefLED G2 170 lighting — coral-growth spectrum with mounting arms, run and dimmed from the Red Sea ReefBeat app.
  • Twin ReefWave 45 gyre pumps — wide, low-turbulence circulation across a 120 cm display, controlled independently of the return.
  • ReefRun G2 8000 DC return pump — variable speed, rated 4,100–8,300 L/h with up to 5.3 m of head.
  • DC Skimmer 600 and ReefMat 1200 — protein export and mechanical filtration handled from day one, with the roller cutting weekly filter-sock changes to occasional roll changes.
  • ReefATO+ auto top-off — a 3-in-1 unit combining top-off, temperature monitoring and external leak detection, standard across the Reefer-S G2+ range.
  • 19 mm ultra-clear rimless glass — front, side and bottom.
What's included
  • REEFER-S 550 G2+ display aquarium and matching cabinet
  • Sump with plumbing and slide-out control panel
  • 2 x ReefLED G2 170 lighting with mounting arms
  • 2 x ReefWave 45 gyre circulation pumps
  • ReefRun G2 8000 DC return pump
  • Red Sea DC Skimmer 600
  • ReefMat 1200 automatic filter roller
  • ReefATO+ auto top-off unit
Not included
  • Heater and any temperature controller — sized separately to your room's ambient temperature
  • Chiller, for climates or rooms where ambient heat pushes the tank above a safe reef temperature
  • Dosing pump system, for two-part or trace element dosing beyond what water changes provide
  • RO/DI unit and saltwater mix — the tank ships dry
  • Live rock, sand or aquascape, and livestock
  • Optional light visor clips

This is a MAX package, not a bare Reefer-S: the lighting, return pump, gyre flow and skimmer are already fitted. A standard (non-MAX) Reefer-S 550 G2+ ships as the aquarium, cabinet and plumbed sump only, though it does carry the ReefATO+ as standard — the two tiers are different purchases at different price points, so check which listing you're comparing against elsewhere.

Will it fit my room?

Allow the full 153 cm system height plus ceiling clearance for lid removal and light servicing, and at least 10 cm behind the cabinet for return plumbing and cabling. At 549 L, water alone weighs roughly 549 kg before the glass, cabinet, rock and substrate are added — Red Sea does not publish a total filled weight for this model, so on an upper floor or bearer-and-joist construction it's worth having the floor checked before it goes in.

Performance

The ReefRun G2 8000 DC return pump is rated across a 4,100–8,300 L/h range with up to 5.3 m of head — the top of that range is a best-case, low-head figure, and actual delivered flow drops once it's working against the lift and plumbing resistance of the installed system. Red Sea publishes a PAR-at-depth chart for the ReefLED G2 170 fixture on its own site; we haven't reproduced exact figures here as we couldn't verify them against the live chart at time of writing — ask us if you'd like the current chart before you buy.

Suitable for, and not suitable for

Suited to a reefer wanting a wide, shallow display with lighting, flow, skimming and filtration matched and pre-plumbed, in a footprint shorter than a standard Reefer of similar volume. Not the right starting point for a first marine tank — there's no dosing, heating or RO/DI provision, and set-up, cycling and ongoing dosing workload scale with system size.

Care and maintenance

The ReefMat roller reduces mechanical filtration to periodic roll changes rather than weekly sock washing; skimmer cup emptying and gyre pump impeller cleaning remain routine tasks. Budget for ReefMat roll refills and skimmer neck cleaning as the main consumables.

Safety

All included electrical equipment is mains-powered — run it through an RCD-protected circuit, and keep drip loops on every cable entering the cabinet.

Warranty and delivery

Covered by Red Sea's manufacturer warranty, which applies in addition to your consumer guarantee rights under Australian Consumer Law. This is an oversized item typically shipped assembled or part-assembled on a pallet — expect a two-person kerbside or room-of-choice delivery depending on access, and confirm stair or doorway clearance before ordering.

Common questions

What's the difference between the standard Reefer-S 550 G2+ and the MAX?

The standard Reefer-S 550 G2+ is the aquarium, cabinet, plumbed sump and ReefATO+ only. The MAX adds the lighting, return pump, gyre circulation, skimmer and filter roller already fitted — it's a running system rather than a tank you still need to equip.

Do I still need a heater?

Yes. Heating isn't included in any Reefer-S package tier — size a heater to 549 L and your room's typical low ambient temperature.

What makes the Reefer-S different from a standard Reefer?

Red Sea builds the Reefer-S wider and deeper than the standard Reefer at a given volume — this 550 is 68 cm wide and 65 cm deep, rather than the narrower, taller footprint of an equivalent-volume standard Reefer.

Is the floor under this tank a concern?

At 549 L it's worth checking, particularly on an upper floor — water alone weighs around 549 kg before cabinet, glass, rock and sand are added, and Red Sea doesn't publish a filled weight for this model.
