Seachem Flourish Trace
Planted tanks run out of trace elements between water changes long before they run out of the big three nutrients. Seachem Flourish Trace is a blend of boron, cobalt, copper, manganese, molybdenum, zinc and other trace elements formulated to replace what plants deplete, as part of the Flourish planted-aquarium range. It suits any freshwater planted aquarium running on a regular fertilising routine.
Key features
- Broad trace-element blend – boron, cobalt, copper, manganese, molybdenum, zinc, rubidium, nickel and vanadium in one dose.
- Won't noticeably shift pH, GH or KH – Seachem states the concentrations are too low to act as a buffer.
- Pairs with liquid Flourish – alternate days with regular Flourish rather than dosing both on the same day.
- Contains copper – genuinely useful for plants, but worth knowing if you keep shrimp or snails; see Safety below.
- Cost per litre drops sharply with size – the small bottles run about 1c per litre treated, the 2 L and 4 L bottles under 1c.

Which size do I need?
The 50 mL and 100 mL bottles work out to around 1c per litre of water treated; step up to 250 mL or larger and it drops to under 1c per litre. If you're dosing a large or heavily planted tank twice weekly, the 2 L or 4 L bottle is the better-value option – if you're trying trace dosing for the first time, start small.
Dosage and directions
Standard dose: 5 mL (one capful) per 80 L, twice weekly. If you're also dosing regular Flourish, alternate the two on different days rather than dosing both at once.
Suitable for, and not suitable for
- Suitable for freshwater planted aquariums on a regular fertilising routine.
- Not recommended for reef or marine tanks – Seachem markets this as a freshwater planted-tank product only.
- Keep in mind if you keep shrimp or snails – see Safety.
Safety
This product contains a small amount of copper (0.0032%), which is toxic to invertebrates at high concentrations. Seachem places shrimp and snails in its "sensitive" compatibility category for this product – start with a partial dose and build up gradually rather than dosing at full strength straight away. Seachem also notes it's very difficult to reach an overdosing level of copper through Flourish products alone at normal doses. As with any concentrated fertiliser, a minor overdose is typically not harmful, but a large one can stress fish, plants and beneficial bacteria.
Goes well with
- Seachem Flourish Phosphorus and Seachem Flourish Potassium – the macro-nutrients this product doesn't supply.
- Seachem Flourish Tabs – root-zone feeding for heavy root-feeding plants.

Common questions
Is it safe for shrimp?
It contains a small amount of copper, and Seachem lists shrimp and snails as sensitive to this product – start with a partial dose and increase gradually, rather than dosing at full strength from day one.
Will it affect my pH, GH or KH?
Seachem states no noticeable effect – the trace-element concentrations are too low to act as a buffer.
Can I dose it on the same day as regular Flourish?
Seachem's guidance is to alternate – dose one on one day, the other a couple of days later, rather than both at once.
Can I use it in a reef tank?
No – it's formulated and marketed for freshwater planted aquariums, not reef or marine systems.
Which size treats the most water per dollar?
The 2 L and 4 L bottles work out to under 1c per litre treated, roughly half the per-litre cost of the 50 mL bottle.
