Seiryu Rock

One hand-picked piece of seiryu stone, sold individually. Bioscape Seiryu Rock is a naturally occurring aquascaping stone in light-to-mid grey tones with fine white mineral veining and sharp, angular faces, sold as a single piece rather than by the kilo or the box – useful for topping up an existing layout or picking one specific shape.

Key features
  • Classic grey seiryu-style stone – the stone behind countless Iwagumi and Japanese-style aquascapes, sold here as an individual piece.
  • Sharp, angular faces – mountain-like ridges that suit dramatic, structured layouts.
  • Sold by the piece, not weight – pick this listing when you want to add or replace a single stone rather than commit to a full kilo or box.
  • Each piece is unique – natural stone, so shape, weight and exact colouring vary piece to piece; the photo is representative, not the exact piece you'll receive.

Suitable for, and not suitable for

Suitable for freshwater and marine aquascapes, and for terrariums, where a hard, mineral-rich stone is wanted for structure or an Iwagumi-style layout. Not a good match for soft, acidic setups – seiryu-type stone is calcareous and will gradually raise KH, GH and pH as it weathers, which makes it a poor choice for species that need soft water, such as many tetras, wild-caught shrimp and Apistogramma, or for plant-heavy layouts relying on low mineral content.

Preparation

Rinse the piece thoroughly before adding it to a tank to clear dust from handling. Because it's calcareous, it's worth running a bucket test first – leave it in a container of your tap or RO water for a few days and check KH, GH and pH before and after, so you know what to expect in the display tank. Washing it well reduces, but doesn't eliminate, its effect on hardness over time.

Warranty and delivery

Covered against being not as described under Australian Consumer Law. As a natural product, the piece you receive will vary from the listing photo in exact shape and colour – that's expected, not a fault.

Common questions

Will this raise my water hardness?

Yes, gradually. Seiryu-style stone is calcareous and slowly releases calcium carbonate, raising KH, GH and pH over time. Wash it well and bucket-test it first if you're running a soft-water tank.

What's the difference between this and Black Seiryu Rock?

Both are the same seiryu-style stone with the same calcareous composition, so the water-hardness effect is identical. The difference is colour: this piece is light-to-mid grey with white veining, where Black Seiryu Rock runs to a deeper charcoal.

Is it safe for shrimp?

It's not ideal for wild-caught or soft-water shrimp species, since the hardness rise it causes suits harder-water setups better than soft, acidic ones. Hardier, harder-water-tolerant shrimp are generally fine with it.

Will I get the exact piece shown in the photo?

No – this is a single natural piece and the photo is representative of the stone type, not a guarantee of the specific piece you'll receive.
