Zoo Med Terra Pump
Cut water-change time from hours to minutes. The Terra Pump is a mains-powered drain-and-fill pump for aquariums, turtle tanks and paludariums, using a 28 watt motor to both empty and refill a tank through the same 1.8 metre hose. Suction cups hold the intake in place, and a removable fish guard helps keep fish and substrate out of the pump. It suits keepers who currently siphon or bucket water by hand and want a faster way to handle routine water changes.
Key features
- 28 watt motor drains most habitats in under five minutes and refills at a similar rate, using the one pump for both directions
- 1.8 m flexible clear vinyl hose plus a 2.7 m mains cord fitted with an Australian plug
- Side-mounted suction cups hold the intake line against the inside of the tank
- Removable fish guard on the intake reduces the risk of drawing in small fish, fry or substrate
- Maximum head height of 1.5 m, so the pump can lift water well above tank level
- On/off power switch for control over when water is moving
- Compact plastic and vinyl housing designed to be moved between tanks

Not suitable for
- Tanks or sumps further away than the fitted hose and cord will reach; not designed to run from an extension lead
- Unattended set-and-forget drainage, as with any mains-powered water appliance it should be checked periodically while running
- Outdoor use, or any position where the pump body, cord or power point could get wet or be rained on
- Submerging the pump body itself, only the hose and intake end go into the water; the motor housing stays dry outside the tank
What's included

- Removable fish guard
- Suction cup intake mount
Safety
This is a mains-powered appliance, so electrical safety matters. The version supplied to Australian retailers is fitted with an Australian mains plug, and independent Australian stockists list matching specifications (28 W, 1.8 m hose, 2.7 m cord) to the manufacturer's own figures. We could not independently confirm the exact voltage and frequency printed on the pump's own compliance rating plate, so check this against your unit before first use. Always plug into a switched, RCD-protected power point, keep the plug and cord away from splash zones, avoid extension leads, unplug before cleaning or moving the unit, and never submerge the motor housing.
Care and maintenance
- Rinse the hose and fish guard after each water change to stop algae or mineral build-up affecting flow
- Wipe down and dry the pump housing before storing, since the motor unit is not designed to be submerged
- Coil the cord loosely rather than kinking it, and check the cord and plug for damage before each use
Warranty and delivery
Covered by Zoo Med's 1 year manufacturer warranty against defects, in addition to the consumer guarantees you're entitled to under the Australian Consumer Law. Delivery options and timeframes are shown at checkout.
Common questions
Does the Terra Pump work on Australian power without a converter?
The version sold through Australian retailers is fitted with an Australian mains plug, so no separate plug adaptor is needed. As with any mains-powered aquarium equipment, check the voltage and frequency rating printed on the pump before first use and plug it into a switched, RCD-protected power point.
Can it drain and refill an aquarium using the same pump?
Yes. It is a dual-purpose drain and fill pump: the 28 watt motor empties a tank in under five minutes in most habitats and refills it at a similar rate through the same hose.
What size tank can I use it with?
Zoo Med does not publish a maximum tank size for the Terra Pump. Sizing is really governed by the 1.8 m hose reach and 1.5 m maximum head height rather than tank volume, so it suits most home aquarium and turtle tank setups where the pump can be positioned within that reach.
Is the pump submersible?
No. The motor housing is an external, dry-mounted unit; only the hose and intake end go into the water, held in place with the suction cups. The pump body itself should never be submerged.
