Lees Aqua gravel cleaners come from Lee's Aquarium and Pet Products, a family owned business founded in 1975 and based in San Marcos, California, where it makes most of its range. The Gravel Cleaner is a self starting siphon: a few pumps of the barrel start the flow without a mouthful of tank water, then the wide barrel lifts waste out of the substrate while the gravel drops back. It comes in five barrel lengths, from the 5 inch Mini to a 24 inch barrel for deep tanks. The Slim Gravel Cleaner, in 6 inch Junior and 12 inch Standard, narrows the barrel for nano and betta tanks where a standard vacuum is too big to work between plants.
Vacuum about a third of the substrate at each water change and leave the rest, so the bacteria living in the gravel are never all disturbed at once.
