Aqua Medic Smart Drift 3.1 Current Pump-4,600L/H
A compact, app-controlled wavemaker for tanks up to 300 litres. The Aqua Medic Smart Drift 3.1 is a magnetic-drive circulation pump rated up to 4,600 L/h, built for reef and planted tanks that need broad, adjustable flow without a bulky powerhead taking up display space.
It's the smallest of Aqua Medic's three-model Smart Drift range, sized for nano and standard-sized display tanks rather than the large systems the 7.1 and 11.1 are built for.
Key features
- Up to 4,600 L/h — continuously adjustable from the controller or the Aqua Medic App, rather than a single fixed speed.
- Low power draw — 3–15 W depending on the flow setting, run off a 24V DC pump head powered through the included 100–240V transformer, which accepts Australian 230V/50Hz mains.
- Magnetic mount — holds through glass up to 10mm thick, so the pump body sits inside the tank with no visible bracket outside it.
- Fully submersible — rated IP X8.
- App and controller control — set constant flow, pulse, ramp, or random wave patterns from the Aqua Medic App, or drive it from the included physical controller.
- Multi-pump sync — pair two or more Smart Drift units for master–slave or cross-flow patterns across a wider tank.
- Feed pause — a one-touch pause on the controller stops flow during feeding, so food doesn't get blasted into the overflow before your fish find it.

Performance — controllable flow range
Aqua Medic's own operation manual for the Smart Drift 3.1 states the flow is continuously adjustable between 30% and 100% of the rated 4,600 L/h maximum — so from roughly 1,400 L/h up to the full 4,600 L/h, depending on the pattern and setting you choose from the controller or app. This is the manufacturer's documented control range rather than a single headline number, and it's what lets you run a gentle random wave for a planted tank one week and a strong constant flow for a reef the next.
Which Smart Drift do I need?
| Model | Max flow | Power | Recommended tank | Body size | Max glass |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Smart Drift 3.1 | 4,600 L/h | 3–15 W | Up to 300 L | Ø65 × 55mm | 10 mm |
| Smart Drift 7.1 | 10,500 L/h | 8–25 W | Up to 800 L | Ø75 × 65mm | 12 mm |
| Smart Drift 11.1 | 16,000 L/h | 10–35 W | Up to 1,500 L | Ø85 × 70mm | 15 mm |
The three models are physically different pump sizes, not the same body at different power settings — moving up a size means a larger pump head and a thicker maximum glass rating, not just a firmware change. For a nano or standard display tank up to around 300 L, the 3.1 is the right starting point; a larger reef or a tank over 300 L will outgrow its flow range.
Suitable for, and not suitable for
Suitable for freshwater and marine tanks up to roughly 300 L that want app-controlled, patterned flow rather than a single fixed-speed powerhead. Not intended for glass over 10mm thick — the magnetic mount won't hold reliably beyond that, so check your tank's glass or acrylic thickness before ordering.
Goes well with
Pair with a second Smart Drift 3.1 for cross-flow in a wider tank, or step up to the 7.1 if you're planning a larger system later — the app supports mixed-model multi-pump sync.

Common questions
Can I run the Smart Drift 3.1 without the app?
Yes. The included physical controller runs the pump and its flow patterns without needing a phone connected — the app adds remote control and additional pattern options.
What's the minimum flow it can run at?
Aqua Medic's manual for this model documents a continuously adjustable range down to 30% of the rated maximum, so approximately 1,400 L/h at the low end.
Will it fit a rimless nano tank?
It mounts magnetically through glass up to 10mm thick, which covers the great majority of nano and standard display tanks — check your glass thickness if you're unsure.
Does it have a feeding mode?
Yes — a one-touch feed pause on the controller stops the flow for feeding, then resumes automatically.
Is it fully submersible?
Yes — Aqua Medic rates the 3.1 at IP X8.
