Bioscape 1050L/h Canister Replacement Sponges (2 White/1 Blue)
The pads that stop your canister pushing cloudy water back into the tank.
This is the genuine BIS540A media set for the Bioscape PRO Easy Clean Canister Filter 1050 L/h. It contains three pads: two white fine filter wool pads and one blue foam/wool pad. These sit above the coarse pre-filter stage and handle the fine mechanical polishing – the stage that turns visibly clear water into properly clear water.
What you get, and what each pad does
- 2 x white fine filter wool pads – the polishing stage. They trap the fine suspended particles that make water look faintly milky or hazy even when the coarse foams are doing their job. Fine wool clogs relatively fast by design, which is why Bioscape treats it as a replaceable item rather than something you rinse forever.
- 1 x blue foam/wool pad – the denser supporting stage beneath the white wool. It catches what the wool releases and carries a useful bacterial population, so it is not something to throw away on the same schedule as the white pads.

Which BIS540 media do I need?
The Bioscape PRO 1050 L/h canister runs three replaceable media packs. They are not interchangeable, and this page is only one of the three.
| Code | Pack contents | Stage | Bioscape's service instruction |
|---|---|---|---|
| BIS540A (this page) | 2 white fine wool pads, 1 blue foam pad | Fine mechanical | Replace fine wool every 4 to 6 weeks |
| BIS540B | Activated carbon pack | Chemical | Replace every 4 to 6 weeks |
| BIS540C | 4 pre-filter foams | Coarse mechanical, pre-filter chamber | Rinse monthly |
Order the matching set: BIS540B activated carbon and BIS540C pre-filter foam 4 pack.
Will it fit my filter?
It fits the 1050 L/h PRO canister and nothing else. Bioscape sizes this media to the canister body, and the three PRO models have three different body diameters.
| Filter | Flow | Sponge set code |
|---|---|---|
| PRO Easy Clean Canister 1050 L/h | 1,050 L/h | BIS540A – this page |
| PRO Easy Clean Canister 1620 L/h | 1,620 L/h | BIS541A |
| PRO Easy Clean Canister 2000 L/h | 2,000 L/h | BIS542A |
It does not fit the Bioscape Tropic canister range, the Bioscape Stainless Steel canisters, or the Bioscape hang-on filters. Those are separate product lines with their own media. If you are unsure which canister you own, the model code is on the label on the canister body.
Care and maintenance
- Do not change all three pads at once. Your biological filtration lives in the media. Replacing the two white wool pads while leaving the blue pad alone keeps the bacterial colony intact through the service.
- Rinse the blue pad, do not bin it. Rinse it gently in a bucket of aquarium water. Tap water is chlorinated and kills the bacteria you are trying to keep.
- Replace the white wool on schedule. Bioscape specifies 4 to 6 weeks for fine wool. Heavily stocked tanks reach that point sooner. Fine wool that has gone brown and stiff is restricting flow, not filtering.
- Check the impeller if flow does not recover. If fresh pads do not restore output, the problem is upstream – usually a clogged pre-filter or a fouled impeller.
Goes well with
- Bioscape 1050L/h Canister Pre-Filter Foam 4 Pack (BIS540C) – the coarse stage ahead of these pads. If it is clogged, new wool will clog again within days.
- Bioscape 1050L/h Canister Carbon Cartridge (BIS540B) – on the same 4 to 6 week cycle, so it makes sense to hold both.
- Bioscape Premium Fine Filter Wool 6 Pack – cut-to-fit sheet wool for topping up between genuine pad changes.
- Bioscape PRO 1050LPH Canister Filter – the filter these pads belong to.
Warranty and delivery
Bioscape warrants the PRO canister filters for 2 years. Filter media is a consumable and is not covered by that term. Your rights under the Australian Consumer Law apply to this product and are not limited by any manufacturer's warranty. Ships as a standard parcel.
Common questions
What is the difference between the white and blue pads?
The two white pads are fine filter wool – a dense polishing stage that traps fine suspended particles and clogs relatively quickly by design. The single blue pad is a denser foam/wool pad that sits beneath them, catches what the wool releases, and hosts a meaningful share of the filter's beneficial bacteria. Treat the white pads as consumable and the blue pad as rinseable.
How often should I replace the BIS540A pads?
Bioscape specifies replacing fine wool every 4 to 6 weeks in the PRO canister range. Heavily stocked or heavily fed tanks will need it at the shorter end. The blue pad is rinsed in aquarium water rather than replaced on that schedule.
Can I just rinse the white pads instead of replacing them?
You can rinse them once or twice to extend their life, but fine wool loses its structure as it is squeezed and stops trapping the fine particles it exists to catch. Once it stays discoloured and stiff after rinsing, it is restricting flow rather than filtering, and it should be replaced.
Will BIS540A fit the 1620 or 2000 L/h Bioscape canister?
No. Each PRO canister has a different body diameter. The 1620 L/h model takes BIS541A and the 2000 L/h model takes BIS542A. Check the model code on the canister body before ordering.
Should I replace the sponges and the carbon at the same time?
They share the same 4 to 6 week interval, so it is convenient to do both in one service. Just leave the blue pad and the biological media alone during that change so the bacterial colony survives.
