Exo Terra Aztec Waterfall
Moving water that encourages lizards to drink. The Exo Terra Aztec Waterfall (PT3164) is a terrarium water feature carved with Aztec-style maize imagery. A pump is included: it sits inside the unit and runs water from the basin back down the rock face, giving a steady supply of moving drinking water and adding humidity to the enclosure. It needs a power point within reach of the terrarium.
Key features
- Pump included, so it is ready to run once filled and plugged in.
- Moving water, which Exo Terra says stimulates natural drinking behaviour in lizards such as chameleons, anoles and water dragons.
- Raises humidity inside the terrarium.
- Adjustable flow using the flow control tab on the pump's impeller cover (the cover over the spinning part that moves the water).
- Comes apart in two pieces for cleaning.
- Rock finish outside, smooth surface inside, part of Exo Terra's Aztec range.
Specifications
- Size: about 18.5 cm across x 25 cm high
- Water capacity: about 400 ml
- Pump: included, submersible (must sit under water to run)
- Water: freshwater only, maximum water temperature 35 °C
- Use: indoor household use only, not for commercial use
Suitable for, and not suitable for
Suitable for tropical and rainforest terrariums, and for lizards that drink from moving water rather than a still bowl, such as chameleons, anoles and water dragons. Not suitable for saltwater or brackish water, for arid setups where extra humidity is not wanted, or for enclosures with no power point nearby. Because the pump must never run dry, it is not suited to a setup where the water level cannot be checked every day.
Setting up
- Attach the pump to the waterfall's output tube inside the unit.
- Put the waterfall in its final spot on a flat, level surface.
- Fill the basin until the pump is covered.
- Plug it in. If it does not start straight away, check the water level.
Care
The impeller well needs regular cleaning. Unplug the pump and take it out of the waterfall, remove the intake screen and then the impeller cover, lift the impeller out, and clean the impeller and the well of slime and debris. Put it back together in reverse order. Do not use detergents or chemical cleaners. Exo Terra suggests treating the water with a conditioner that removes chlorine and heavy metals.
Safety
- The pump must always be under water and must never run dry. Water evaporates quickly under a heat lamp, so check the level daily.
- Set up a drip loop (let the cord hang below the power point before it rises to it) so water cannot run along the cord to the plug.
- Use a power point protected by an RCD (safety switch).
- Unplug it before putting your hands in the water.
- The pump motor has no user serviceable parts. Do not try to repair it.
- Supervise children so they do not play with it.
