Fluval AC50 Activated Carbon Insert 3 Pack
Strips odour, discolouration and dissolved organics from the water.
Fluval's Activated Carbon insert for the AquaClear 50 is sized specifically to that filter's basket, sold here as a pack of three. Carbon traps gases and dissolved impurities in its structure – including toxic metals such as copper – for clearer, odour-free water. It suits any AquaClear 50 owner running general chemical filtration, and anyone clearing residual medication from the tank after a treatment course.
Key features
- Activated carbon – adsorbs dissolved organics, odour-causing compounds and heavy metals including copper.
- Fits the AC50 only – sized specifically for that basket, at 70 g per insert.
- Fresh and saltwater safe – the same insert works across both water types.
- Three-pack – roughly three months of replacements at Fluval's stated monthly interval.

This insert is sized for the AC50 basket only. Fluval sells differently sized carbon inserts for the AC20, AC30 and AC70/110 – check the model printed on your filter before ordering.
Suitable for, and not suitable for
Suitable for general chemical filtration in a freshwater or saltwater AC50 tank, and for pulling residual medication out after a treatment course. Not suitable as the only stage in the basket – it runs alongside the foam and Biomax stages, not instead of them.
Safety
Carbon adsorbs dissolved medication along with odour and discolouration. Remove it before dosing a treatment so the medication isn't stripped out before it can work, then put a fresh insert in afterwards to help clear the tank.
Care and maintenance
Replace every four weeks. Carbon doesn't recharge once its adsorption capacity is used up, so an old insert left in place past that point isn't doing anything further.
Goes well with
- Biomax Insert 80gm – the biological stage sized for the AC50 basket
- Bio-Foam Insert 3 Pack – the mechanical stage underneath
Warranty and delivery
Sold as genuine Fluval filter media. Your rights under the Australian Consumer Law apply in full and nothing here limits them. Ships as a standard small parcel anywhere in Australia.
Common questions
Should I remove this before dosing medication?
Yes. Activated carbon adsorbs most medications, which reduces how well the treatment works. Take it out before dosing and replace with a fresh insert once the course is finished.
Does it fit the AquaClear 30?
No. Fluval sizes carbon inserts to each filter separately. This one is cut for the AC50 basket only.
What's the AC50's flow rate?
Fluval doesn't publish a GPH or L/h figure for the AC50 on its current product pages – the filter uses an adjustable flow-control valve rather than a single fixed rating.
Can I use it in a saltwater tank?
Yes, Fluval lists this insert as suitable for both freshwater and saltwater AquaClear 50 filters.
Does carbon affect pH?
Fluval doesn't publish a pH or KH effect for this media, so we're not going to claim one either way.
