Fluval AC50 Biomax Insert 80gm
Cultures the bacteria that finish the nitrogen cycle. This is the genuine Fluval BioMax insert for the AquaClear 50 (AC50) power filter, part 19662, supplied as a single 80 g bag. It is the biological stage at the back of the AC50's media basket, closest to the motor and the return waterfall.
Key features
- Genuine Fluval part 19662 – sized to the AC50 basket's rear compartment.
- Nodular bio-ring structure – an irregular surface that gives bacteria more contact area than a smooth ceramic ring of the same volume.
- Reduces ammonia and nitrite – the bacteria colonising the rings are what finish the nitrogen cycle; the foam and chemical media ahead of it only prepare the water for this stage.
- Mesh bag included – drops straight into the basket without loose rings scattering through the impeller well.

Will it fit my filter?
| Filter | Takes this insert |
|---|---|
| AquaClear 50 / AC50 | Yes |
| AquaClear 70 / AC70, 110 / AC110 | No – these take the larger 125 g BioMax bag, sold separately |
| AquaClear 20 / AC20, 30 / AC30 | No – smaller BioMax bag, sold separately |
Fluval packs a different BioMax weight for each AquaClear body, so check the model number on your filter before ordering rather than going by tank size alone.
What's included
- 1 x BioMax bag, 80 g, in its own mesh sleeve
Not included
- The Bio-Foam and chemical media stages that sit ahead of it in the basket.
- The AC50 filter unit itself.
Suitable for, and not suitable for
Suitable for scheduled replacement on any AquaClear 50 / AC50, and for restoring biological capacity after a deep clean or a filter that ran dry.
Not suitable for the AC20, AC30, AC70 or AC110 – each takes a BioMax bag sized to its own basket.
Care and maintenance
Rinse in removed tank water at each service, never under tap water, which will chlorinate the colony. Replace on the 3-month schedule even if the rings still look clean – the bacterial film doing the work isn't visible, and ageing rings compact and channel water around themselves.
Goes well with
- Bio-Foam insert for AC50 – the mechanical stage ahead of this one
- Clear-Carb insert for AC50 – chemical polishing media for the middle stage
- AquaClear hang-on filter motor – for a full rebuild rather than a media change
Warranty and delivery
Supplied as genuine Fluval replacement media. Your rights under the Australian Consumer Law apply in full and nothing here limits them. Ships as a standard small parcel anywhere in Australia.
Common questions
How often should I replace the AC50 BioMax insert?
Every 3 months. Replacing sooner isn't necessary and discards an established bacterial colony for no benefit.
Should I replace the foam and BioMax at the same time?
No – stagger them. Replacing every media stage in the basket at once removes most of the tank's biological filtration in one go, which risks a mini-cycle.
Will the AC70 BioMax bag fit my AC50?
No – it's the wrong weight for the AC50's basket and is sized for the larger AC70/AC110 body. Use the 80 g bag made for the AC50.
