Fluval UVC Inline Clarifier up 400L
An in-line UV clarifier that plumbs straight into your canister filter's return line to clear green-water algae and knock back free-floating bacteria. The Fluval UVC In-Line Clarifier (model A203) runs a sealed 3 W UV lamp between your filter and the tank, treating water as it flows past on its way back to the aquarium. It's rated for aquariums up to 400 L (100 US gal) and connects using 16 mm (5/8") hose, the same fitting used on Fluval's 06 and 07 series canister filters.
Key features
- Sealed 3 W UV-C lamp – rated up to 30,000 hours of use before output drops, with a status light that tells you when it's spent
- In-line installation – connects into your existing canister filter's return hose rather than needing its own separate pump
- Rated to 400 L (100 US gal) aquariums
- Universal power supply – auto-switching 100–240 V, 50/60 Hz, so it runs on Australian 240 V mains without a converter
- Compact housing – 16 x 13 x 6.6 cm, small enough to sit behind the cabinet doors with the rest of your plumbing
- Comes with 47 cm of ribbed hose to connect in-line

Will it fit my filter?
The clarifier is not a standalone unit – it needs an existing canister filter's pump to push water through it, and it connects using 16 mm (5/8") internal diameter hose, the fitting used on Fluval's 06 and 07 series canisters. If your canister runs a different hose diameter you'll need a step adaptor. It is not submersible and is not designed to be dropped into the tank or sump.
Performance
Fluval doesn't publish a dose-versus-flow chart (µW·s/cm²) for this sealed unit, so we can't give you an exact kill dose at a given flow rate – that's a gap in Fluval's own documentation, not something we're prepared to estimate. Treat the 400 L tank rating and 930 L/h maximum flow as Fluval's guide to appropriate use. The unit is marketed for clearing green-water algae blooms and reducing free-floating bacteria; Fluval does not market it as a parasite treatment.
Suitable for, and not suitable for
- Suitable for in-line use on a canister filter's return line, on aquariums up to 400 L
- Not a substitute for mechanical or biological filtration – run it alongside your existing filter, not instead of it
- Not for swimming pools, drinking water systems, or flammable liquids
- Not rated for water above 35°C
- Not submersible and not repairable – the lamp is sealed inside the housing
Care and maintenance
There's no bulb to change out. The lamp is sealed inside the housing and rated for up to 30,000 hours; a status light indicates when output has dropped and the whole unit needs replacing. Fluval doesn't publish a fixed replacement interval in months – go by the status light rather than a calendar date.
Safety
Mains powered via an auto-switching 100–240 V, 50/60 Hz supply. The unit is not submersible – keep it out of the splash zone and mount it so cabling can't sit in water. Fluval's manual states it isn't intended for use above 35°C water temperature.
Running costs
At a constant 3 W draw run continuously, that's roughly 26 kWh a year – around $7.88 a year at a 30c/kWh tariff. Fluval doesn't publish an official running-cost figure; this is our own calculation from the confirmed wattage, assuming the unit runs whenever your filter does.
Warranty and delivery
Covered by Fluval's standard 2-year warranty against manufacturing defects, in addition to your rights under Australian Consumer Law. Ships as a standard parcel.
Common questions
Will this replace my biological filter?
No. It treats water passing through it with UV light to knock back algae and free-floating bacteria; your canister filter still does the mechanical and biological filtration work.
Can I replace the UV lamp when it wears out?
No – the lamp is sealed inside the housing and isn't sold as a separate part. When the status light shows it's spent, the whole unit is replaced.
What size tank will this handle?
Fluval rates it for aquariums up to 400 L (100 US gal), based on a maximum flow of 930 L/h through the unit.
Does it kill parasites like whitespot?
Fluval doesn't publish the dose data needed to confirm parasite-level treatment for this unit, and doesn't market it for that purpose. It's positioned for green-water algae and free-floating bacteria.
Does it need its own pump?
No – it plumbs into your canister filter's return line and relies on the filter's own pump to push water through it.
