Ocean Nutrition Frozen Clams On The Half Shell

Whole clams left on the shell for grazing marine fish to work at. Ocean Nutrition Frozen Clams On The Half Shell are whole clams, meat and shell together, flash-frozen and supplied in a 100 g tray. Leaving the meat on the shell gives grazing and shell-crushing species something to work at rather than a single mouthful, which suits puffers, triggers and wrasses particularly well.

Key features
  • Single ingredient — whole clams, nothing else in the pack.
  • On the half shell — the shell stays on, giving grazing and crushing species a natural foraging task instead of a soft, pre-shelled piece.
  • Beak and jaw conditioning — shell-crushing feeders such as triggers and puffers get natural wear on beaks and jaw plates that a boneless food doesn't provide.
  • Tray format — supplied as a 100 g mono tray of individual pieces rather than one solid block.
  • Broad marine suitability — taken by angels, butterflies, puffers, triggers, tusks and wrasses, and by bottom feeders such as loaches and catfish in freshwater tanks.

Guaranteed analysis (as published by the manufacturer):

Component Result
Crude protein (min) 5.0%
Crude fat (min) 0.7%
Crude fibre (max) 0.2%
Moisture (max) 39.2%
Ash (max) 53.8%
Phosphorus (min) 0.1%

The high ash and low moisture figures reflect the shell that stays on the product, not the meat alone — this analysis is published by the manufacturer for the clam as sold, shell included.

Suitable for, and not suitable for
  • Suitable for omnivorous and carnivorous grazers, including marine angels, butterflies, puffers, triggers, tusks and wrasses.
  • Suitable for freshwater puffers and bottom feeders such as loaches and catfish.
  • Not suitable for fish that can't manage a shelled item — small-mouthed or nano species should be fed a boneless food such as chopped mussel or artemia instead.
  • Not a complete standalone diet — rotate it with a staple flake or pellet rather than feeding it exclusively.
How to thaw and feed

Remove a piece from the tray and thaw it in a little tank water before feeding. Never refreeze a thawed portion — feed it or discard it. Keep the remaining tray frozen between feeds, and if it arrives partly thawed on a warm day, transfer it to your own freezer straight away and use it promptly rather than refreezing it. Remove any uneaten shell after feeding to keep water quality up.

Which Ocean Nutrition frozen food should I feed?
Food Animal size Best suited to
Clams On The Half Shell (this product) Whole, on shell Grazing marine fish — puffers, triggers, wrasses; freshwater bottom feeders
Chopped Mussel Chopped Smaller marine fish and invertebrates
Chopped Cockle Chopped Larger predatory marine and freshwater fish
Artemia Whole, ~1 cm Small community fish, nano fish, freshwater and marine

If a fish can't yet manage a whole clam on the shell, step down to chopped mussel or cockle rather than persisting.

Warranty and delivery

As a frozen product this pack ships and must be stored frozen. There is no manufacturer warranty on a consumable food item; the consumer guarantee under Australian Consumer Law — that the product is of acceptable quality and matches its description — applies as it would to any packaged food. Transfer the pack to your own freezer as soon as it arrives.

Common questions

Why leave the shell on?

It gives shell-crushing and grazing feeders such as triggers and puffers a natural foraging task, and the wear helps condition their beaks and jaw plates the way a soft, pre-shelled food doesn't.

Is the shell safe to leave in the tank?

Remove any uneaten shell fragments after feeding rather than leaving them to break down in the water.

Can freshwater fish eat this?

Yes — it's suitable for freshwater bottom feeders such as loaches and catfish, alongside its marine uses.

How much should I feed?

Offer only what the fish will finish within about 5 minutes, 2 to 3 times a day, and remove uneaten food and shell so it does not foul the water.

Can I refreeze a thawed portion?

No — once thawed, feed it or discard it.
