Radion XR15 Gen5 Freshwater

Key features
  • HEI (Hemispherical Edge Illumination) lens for even, shimmer-reduced spread across the tank rather than a single hot spot
  • Full-spectrum white LED array (warm white and cool white dominant) with red, green, blue and lime accent channels, built for plant colour and growth rather than coral colour
  • Compact, low-profile footprint that sits close to the water without dominating a nano or medium aquascape
  • Bluetooth control via EcoTech's Mobius app for iOS and Android, no separate WiFi bridge needed to get set up
  • Independent moonlight channel for a dimmed night-time look
  • Scales up with EcoTech's rail and multi-arm mounting hardware if you run more than one fixture over a tank

PAR and PPFD at depth

We could not find an EcoTech-published PAR or PPFD chart for this specific freshwater spectrum tune on the G5 platform. EcoTech does publish PAR data for its Blue and Pro (reef) G5 spectrums, but that data doesn't transfer to the Freshwater tune, which runs a different LED mix and produces different measured output. We haven't found a reliable independent PAR chart for the freshwater G5 units either. Rather than estimate, we're flagging this honestly: if PAR at a given depth matters for your plant selection, measure it in your own tank with a PAR meter after installation, or get in touch before you buy.

Coverage footprint
Maximum spread 76cm x 76cm (30in x 30in)
Recommended spread (full coverage) 61cm x 61cm (24in x 24in)

EcoTech's general mounting guidance across the G5 range is roughly 18cm (7in) above the waterline or tank rim. This is a general G5 recommendation rather than a figure published specifically for the freshwater spectrum.

Suitable for / not suitable for

Suitable for

Freshwater and planted community aquariums, aquascapes prioritising plant growth and a natural daylight look, and nano to medium tanks that suit the XR15's coverage footprint.

Not suitable for

This is not a reef or coral spectrum. It doesn't produce the blue-shifted output or PAR profile that SPS or LPS coral keeping calls for. If you're lighting a reef tank, EcoTech's current equivalent is the Gen6 Radion Blue or Pro, built specifically for coral.

Goes well with
  • Radion Rail Kit (sold separately) - mounts the fixture on a rail across an open-top or rimless tank instead of an arm
  • EcoTech Single Arm RMS or Multi-Light RMS mounting arm (sold separately) - clamp-on options if you'd rather not use a rail
  • Radion Diffuser (sold separately) - optional accessory for extra colour mixing
  • Radion XR30 Gen5 Freshwater - if you need wider single-fixture coverage over a bigger tank
Warranty and delivery

Covered by EcoTech Marine's standard 12-month limited warranty against defects in materials and workmanship, provided the product is registered with EcoTech within 30 days of purchase. This description doesn't cover freight, stock or handling arrangements.

Common questions

XR15 or XR30 - which one do I need for my planted tank?

It comes down to footprint. The XR15 covers up to roughly 76cm x 76cm at maximum spread, with 61cm x 61cm recommended for full even coverage, which suits nano to medium tanks. If your tank is wider than about 60-70cm, or you'd rather run one fixture instead of two over a longer tank, the XR30 has a longer body and a wider spread.

Is this the same light as your reef Radion models?

Same Gen5 hardware platform and control system, different spectrum. This Freshwater tune runs full-spectrum white LEDs (warm and cool white dominant) built for plant growth and a natural daylight look, with RGB accents, rather than the blue-shifted spectrum of the Blue and Pro reef models. For a reef tank, look at EcoTech's Gen6 Blue or Pro Radion instead.

Do I need a ReefLink or EcoSmart Live to run this?

No. This is a G5 fixture, so it connects directly over Bluetooth via EcoTech's Mobius app. Unlike earlier Radion generations, it doesn't need a ReefLink WiFi bridge or the older EcoSmart Live system to get going.

Will this grow coral colour, or is it just for plants?

It's built for freshwater and planted tanks, not coral. Coral colour and growth respond to a spectrum and light output this fixture isn't tuned for. EcoTech's current reef-specific line is the Gen6 Blue or Pro Radion.

Can I dim it or run a day and night cycle?

Yes. Control is through the Mobius app over Bluetooth, which lets you set light levels and schedules, and the fixture has an independent moonlight channel for a dimmed overnight setting.
