Red Sea ReefRun G2 12000 DC Pump

The flagship of Red Sea's DC return range, sold pump-only. The ReefRun G2 12000 is Red Sea's largest DC return and utility pump, adjustable between 5,000 and 12,000 L/h with a sine-wave DC motor built to run quietly even at full output. This listing is the pump body alone – it needs its own flow controller, sold separately, before it will run at all.

Key features
  • 5,000–12,000 L/h adjustable flow – dial the exact turnover a large display and sump need rather than living with one fixed speed.
  • Rated to 5.9 m of head – enough lift for tall sump risers, elevated returns or long plumbing runs on big systems.
  • Sine-wave DC motor – Red Sea describes it as virtually silent from the start, even running at 100%, without the ramp-up whine some AC pumps develop.
  • 180° rotatable outlet – aim the discharge without re-plumbing the pump body.
  • Universal fittings – hose barbs and female-threaded connectors sized for both metric and US-standard piping, plus PVC pipe adapters.
  • Inlet flow guide – reduces the chance of air being drawn in at the surface, which is what causes DC return pumps to cavitate and get noisy.

Red Sea's published documentation does not state the pump's weight or a dB noise figure. If either matters for your install, ask us to confirm with Red Sea before you order.

What's included / Not included

This listing is the pump body only, as the product name states. In the box: the ReefRun G2 12000 pump, outlet fittings and its power supply.

Not included, and required before the pump will run: a ReefRun G2 12000 flow controller (sold separately) – Red Sea's documentation states the flow controller is mandatory "irrespective of whether you will operate the pump independently or via the ReefRun Dual controller." Budget for the flow controller as part of this purchase, not as an optional extra.

Also not included: the ReefRun Dual DC Pump Controller, an optional additional layer for ReefBeat app scheduling across two pumps – it sits on top of, not instead of, the mandatory flow controller.

Which ReefRun G2 pump do I need?

The G2 range covers four flow bands. Match the pump to your system's turnover target at the head height your plumbing actually runs, not to the headline litres-per-hour figure – every DC pump in this range delivers less than its rated flow once it's lifting water through real plumbing.

Model Flow range Max head Power
ReefRun G2 4000 2,000–4,000 L/h 3.4 m 16–38 W
ReefRun G2 6000 3,600–6,500 L/h 4.4 m 22–56 W
ReefRun G2 8000 4,100–8,300 L/h 5.3 m 24–73 W
ReefRun G2 12000 5,000–12,000 L/h 5.9 m 33–105 W

The 12000 is the pump to size for large Reefer and custom systems with a tall sump riser or a long return run, where a smaller model's head-height ceiling would otherwise limit real-world flow.

Performance

The 5,000–12,000 L/h figure is Red Sea's adjustable flow range at low head, not a single fixed output – the pump is speed-controllable across that whole band once a flow controller is fitted. Maximum head is rated at 5.9 m, meaning flow tapers toward the low end of the adjustable range as lift increases; Red Sea has not published the intermediate flow-at-head figures between 0 m and 5.9 m as a full curve. If you're planning turnover precisely against your sump riser height, use the low end of the adjustable range as your working assumption once you're above roughly 2 m of lift, and ask us for Red Sea's engineering data if you need the exact figure for your plumbing.

Suitable for, and not suitable for

Suited to large reef and marine systems – big Reefer MAX tanks, custom builds and sumps – where turnover, head height or both exceed what the G2 4000, 6000 or 8000 can deliver. Not the right choice for a small or nano system, where the minimum adjustable flow of 5,000 L/h is likely to be far more turnover than the display needs. Requires its own flow controller to operate; factor that into the total cost before ordering.

Care and maintenance

DC pump impellers wear with use – inspect and clean periodically, especially if running against a heavy bioload or with mineral-heavy top-off water. Keep the inlet flow guide clear of debris so it can do its job of keeping air out of the intake.

Safety

Mains-powered and designed for wet-area installation in a sump – run it from an RCD-protected circuit and keep a drip loop in the cable before it reaches any power point or power board.

Warranty and delivery

Covered by Red Sea's manufacturer warranty, in addition to your consumer guarantee rights under Australian Consumer Law. Ships as a standard parcel item.

Goes well with

A ReefRun G2 12000 flow controller – mandatory, not optional, for this pump to run. Add a ReefRun Dual DC Pump Controller if you're running a second ReefRun pump or DC skimmer pump alongside it and want both scheduled together through ReefBeat.

Common questions

Does this pump come with a controller?

No. This listing is the pump body only. A ReefRun G2 12000 flow controller is required before it will run, and is sold as a separate item.

What flow will I actually get through my sump plumbing?

Less than the 12,000 L/h headline figure. Expect meaningfully less once the pump is lifting water through a riser, elbows and a skimmer or filter sock.

Can I run two of these from one ReefRun Dual Controller?

Yes – the Dual Controller manages up to two ReefRun-compatible DC pumps, each still fitted with its own individual flow controller.

Is this pump loud at full speed?

Red Sea markets the G2 range on a sine-wave DC motor designed for quiet running even at 100% output, though Red Sea has not published a decibel figure we can quote directly.
