Seachem Flourish Nitrogen
Nitrogen without the ammonia spike. Seachem Flourish Nitrogen is a concentrated nitrogen source for the planted aquarium, blending nitrate and a complexed, plant-unavailable-until-metabolised form of ammonium – part of the Flourish planted-tank system alongside Flourish, Flourish Iron and Flourish Excel.
Key features
- Dual nitrogen source – roughly half nitrate, half complexed ammonium, giving plants both forms without releasing free ammonia into the water.
- Shrimp and invertebrate safe – no free ammonia is released at label doses.
- Corrects nitrogen deficiency – for stunted growth and pale colour in demanding, fast-growing planted tanks.
- Pairs with the rest of the NPK line – designed to be dosed alongside Flourish Phosphorus and Flourish Potassium for full macronutrient control.
- Five bottle sizes – 100 mL through to 4 L.
Specifications

|---|---|
| Water type | Freshwater, planted tanks |
| Sizes | 100 mL, 250 mL, 500 mL, 2 L, 4 L |
| Beginner dose | 2.5 mL (half a cap) per 160 L, twice weekly or as needed against deficiency signs |

Ingredients
Derived from: Potassium Nitrate, Urea.
| Total Nitrogen (N) | 1.5% |
|---|---|
| Soluble Potash (K₂O) | 2% |
Which size do I need?
Every size works out to under 1c per litre treated at the beginner dose rate – the 4 L bottle is the cheapest per litre of the five, the 100 mL bottle the most expensive, and even the smallest bottle still costs a fraction of a cent per treated litre. A 100 L tank dosed twice weekly at the beginner rate uses roughly 1.6 mL a dose, so a 250 mL bottle covers around six months before a refill.
Dosage and directions
- Beginner dose: 2.5 mL per 160 L, twice a week, or as needed in response to nitrogen deficiency signs (pale new growth, stalled stem growth).
- Expert dosing formula: 0.25 × v × n = m, where v is tank volume in gallons, n is the desired nitrogen increase in mg/L, and m is the millilitres to dose. For a nitrate-equivalent calculation, use 0.05 in place of 0.25.
- Test nitrate with a liquid or strip test kit before dosing if you're unsure of your current level – Flourish Nitrogen adds to whatever nitrate your tank is already carrying from fish waste.
Suitable for, and not suitable for
- Suitable for freshwater planted tanks with fast-growing or nitrogen-hungry stem plants.
- Not needed in most lightly stocked, lightly planted tanks – fish waste alone often supplies enough nitrate, and adding more without plant demand just feeds algae.
- Safe for shrimp and other invertebrates at label doses – no free ammonia is released.
Goes well with
- Seachem Flourish – base trace elements, low in nitrogen and phosphate by design so this product can fill the gap.
- Seachem Flourish Iron – targeted iron dosing for red and deficient plants.
- Seachem Flourish Excel – liquid carbon dosed on its own daily schedule.
Warranty and delivery
Seachem doesn't publish a fixed warranty term on consumable dosing products; your purchase is still covered by the consumer guarantees under Australian Consumer Law. Ships as a standard parcel – no cold chain or special handling required.
Common questions
Will Flourish Nitrogen cause an ammonia spike?
No. Seachem states no free ammonia is released at label doses – the ammonium component is complexed and only becomes plant-available as it's metabolised.
Do I need this if I already have fish in the tank?
Not always. Fish waste already supplies nitrate, and a heavily stocked tank may need little or no extra nitrogen. Flourish Nitrogen is aimed at fast-growing, densely planted tanks where plant demand outpaces what fish waste alone provides – test before dosing if you're unsure.
Is it safe for shrimp?
Yes, Seachem states it's safe for invertebrates including shrimp at label dosing.
What else do I need to dose alongside it?
Flourish Nitrogen covers nitrogen only. For full NPK coverage, Seachem pairs it with Flourish Phosphorus and Flourish Potassium, plus a base trace-element product like Flourish.
