Spider Wood Medium

A single mid-size branch for building a fuller root-tangle scape. Bioscape Spider Wood Medium is one hand-picked piece of fine, twisting root wood in the 30-40 cm grade, sized to anchor a tree or root-tangle structure in a nano to mid-size tank without buying a bulk pack.

Key features
  • 30-40 cm grade – the middle size in Bioscape's Spider Wood range, between Small (20-30 cm) and Large (40-50 cm).
  • Sold as a single piece – pick this listing up individually to fill a gap in an existing scape, or buy several for a full layout.
  • Slender, twisting branches – fine root-and-branch shapes that read as a natural tree rather than a bulky driftwood chunk.
  • Lower tannin release – noticeably less tannin than Mopani or Malaysian driftwood.
  • Every piece unique – natural product; shape and colour vary piece to piece, and the listing photo is a representative sample.

Which size do I need?
Grade Length Best suited to
Small 20-30 cm Nano and shrimp tanks, or a fine accent branch in a larger scape
Medium 30-40 cm Nano to mid-size layouts wanting a real structural feature
Large 40-50 cm Standard to larger tanks wanting a fuller tree structure

Bioscape grades Spider Wood by branch length. Medium, this listing, is the size most aquascapers reach for first – big enough to read as a real structural feature, small enough to still suit a nano or standard tank. Step down to Spider Wood Small for a shrimp-tank accent, or up to Spider Wood Large if the tank runs bigger than about 60 cm.

Suitable for, and not suitable for

Suitable for freshwater aquascaping, from nano tanks through to standard community setups, and also used in reptile enclosures and terrarium or paludarium builds. Bioscape doesn't publish a marine-safe claim for Spider Wood, so treat it as a freshwater and terrarium product rather than a reef-safe one.

Care and maintenance

New Spider Wood is dried for shipping and floats. Weighting the piece down for about a week is usually enough for it to waterlog and sit on its own, though denser pieces can take longer. Presoaking or boiling speeds up sinking and helps reduce tannin release. A harmless white biofilm sometimes forms on new wood underwater – it isn't dangerous, and shrimp, snails and some fish will graze it off.

What's included

One piece of Medium, 30-40 cm Spider Wood. If a layout needs several pieces, order multiples of this listing, or see Bioscape's Spider Wood Medium 10-piece box pack for a bulk option.

Warranty and delivery

Covered against manufacturing and packing defects under Bioscape's warranty, in addition to your rights under Australian Consumer Law.

Common questions

How many pieces do I get?

One piece, in the Medium, 30-40 cm grade. For a multi-piece pack, Bioscape also sells Spider Wood Medium as a 10-piece box.

Will it turn my water brown?

Some tannin release is normal with any natural wood, but Bioscape's Spider Wood releases noticeably less than Mopani or Malaysian driftwood. Presoaking or boiling reduces it further.

Can I mix sizes in one layout?

Yes – combining Small, Medium and Large branches is a common way to build a layered root-tangle or tree structure rather than relying on one uniform size.

Does it float?

Yes, initially. New wood is dried for shipping and needs weighting down until it waterlogs, which typically takes around a week but can vary by piece.
