AMS Bio Culture media gives nitrifying bacteria an inert nano ceramic home, sold as 2 kilogram bags of Balls with a mesh bag and as twin packs of 10 by 10 by 2.5 centimetre Bricks. Both do the same job: provide a stable, high surface area home so ammonia and nitrite are converted quickly. The balls pack into canister baskets, media bags and sump chambers; the bricks lie flat in a sump baffle or filter tray and stay put, where loose balls can shift and let water channel around them. Neither leaches anything or moves pH, and both suit freshwater and marine tanks.
Biological media is colonised, not consumed, so rinse it in tank water at a water change and never replace all of it at once, or you restart the cycle you spent weeks building.
