API Pond Care Algaefix 473ml
Clears green water, string algae and blanket weed without adding copper to the pond. API Pond AlgaeFix is an EPA-registered algaecide for ornamental ponds, killing algae on contact while leaving fish, plants and surrounding wildlife unharmed when dosed as directed. This 473 mL (16 fl oz) bottle is a concentrate – a single full-strength dose treats roughly 17,900 L of pond water.
Key features
- Copper-free algaecide – controls green water, string algae and blanket weed without the copper risk that rules a product out for shrimp, snails and other invertebrates.
- EPA-registered active constituent – poly[oxyethylene(dimethyliminio)ethylene(dimethyliminio)ethylene dichloride] at 4.50%.
- Concentrated dosing – 5 mL treats 190 L, so one 473 mL bottle covers roughly 17,900 L at a single full dose, at under 1c per litre of pond water treated.
- Fast acting – repeat dosing brings visible algae control within days.
- Fish and plant safe when used as directed – not safe for freshwater crustaceans (see Suitable for, below).

Dosage and directions
- Measure 5 mL (1 tsp) per 190 L (50 US gal) of pond water – or 60 mL (¼ cup) per 2,275 L (600 US gal) for larger ponds.
- Mix into a bucket of pond water first, or add near a pump outflow, waterfall or aerator so it disperses evenly.
- Repeat the dose every 3 days until algae is under control.
- Once clear, switch to one maintenance dose per week.
- Run vigorous aeration for 24 hours after each dose, especially in warm weather – decaying algae consumes oxygen as it breaks down.
Suitable for, and not suitable for
Suitable for:
- Ornamental ponds, water gardens and fountains with green water, string algae or blanket weed
- Ponds stocked with fish and pond plants, dosed as directed
Not suitable for:
- Ponds holding freshwater crustaceans – shrimp, crabs and lobsters – which the label specifically excludes
- Dosing without follow-up aeration in warm weather, where oxygen depletion from decaying algae is the real risk, not the algaecide itself
Care and maintenance
Remove dead algae as it surfaces rather than leaving it to break down in the pond – decomposing algae releases the nutrients that feed the next bloom, so skimming it out gets more from every dose. API Pond EcoFix is designed to digest that dead algae and the sludge underneath it once the AlgaeFix course is done.
Safety and handling
- Harmful if swallowed or absorbed through skin; causes moderate eye irritation.
- Flush eyes with water for 15–20 minutes on contact; wash skin with soap and water.
- If swallowed, contact a doctor or Poison Control immediately.
- Keep out of reach of children and pets.
Goes well with
- API Pond EcoFix – beneficial bacteria to digest the dead algae AlgaeFix leaves behind.
- API Pond Simply Clear – for cloudy water from suspended particles rather than algae growth.
Warranty and delivery
This is a consumable pond treatment, so no manufacturer warranty period applies. That doesn't affect your rights under the Australian Consumer Law – if the product is faulty, unsafe or not as described, you're entitled to a remedy. Ships as standard freight.
Common questions
Will this harm my pond fish?
No – API states AlgaeFix will not harm fish or pond plants when dosed as directed. It is not safe for freshwater crustaceans such as shrimp, crabs or lobsters.
Why does the pond need extra aeration after dosing?
Algae killed by the treatment decomposes in the water, which consumes dissolved oxygen. Vigorous aeration for 24 hours after dosing, especially in warm weather, prevents that decay from crashing oxygen levels.
How long until the algae clears?
Repeat the dose every 3 days until the algae is under control, then move to a weekly maintenance dose. Visible improvement is typically seen within the first few doses.
Is this the same as copper-based algaecides?
No. AlgaeFix's active constituent is a polymeric compound, not copper, which is why it's safer around plants and most invertebrates – though it still shouldn't be used where freshwater crustaceans are present.
Can I use this in an aquarium instead of a pond?
This product is formulated and labelled for ornamental ponds, water gardens and fountains. Follow the pond dosing directions given here; it is not sold or labelled as an aquarium product.
