Aqua Medic Anti Red

Clears red slime without wrecking your biological filter. Aqua Medic Anti Red is a liquid treatment for marine aquariums that targets cyanobacteria – the red or maroon slime that spreads across sand and rock – while leaving nitrifying bacteria, corals and invertebrates undisturbed. It is dosed against your system's actual water volume, not applied directly to the outbreak.

Key features
  • Targets cyanobacteria specifically – treats the red slime bloom without the broad-spectrum knockdown of an antibiotic.
  • Leaves the nitrogen cycle intact – does not harm the nitrifying bacteria your filtration depends on.
  • Invertebrate-safe when dosed correctly – suitable for reef systems carrying corals, shrimp and other invertebrates.
  • Encourages macroalgae – supports healthy green and coralline growth once the cyanobacteria clears.
  • Two pack sizes – 100 mL for smaller systems and top-ups, 1000 mL for larger tanks or repeat courses.
How to use it

Dose against your system's actual water volume, following the rate printed on the pack – cyanobacteria treatments are concentration-sensitive, so under- or over-dosing both cause problems. Three set-up steps matter as much as the dose itself:

  • Keep the protein skimmer running throughout treatment – it exports the organic load the cyanobacteria is feeding on.
  • Switch off carbon filtration for the treatment period; activated carbon will strip the active ingredient before it can work.
  • Siphon out dead algae as it lifts and keep mechanical filtration strong – decomposing cyanobacteria pulls oxygen down and can trigger a second bloom if left in the tank.

Suitable for, and not suitable for

Suitable for established marine and reef aquariums carrying fish, coral and invertebrates. Not a substitute for fixing the underlying cause – cyanobacteria blooms are almost always a symptom of excess nutrients, poor flow in dead spots, or an ageing light source, and it will return if those are not addressed alongside the treatment.

Warranty and delivery

Covered by the manufacturer's standard shelf-life guarantee, in addition to your rights under Australian Consumer Law. Ships standard parcel from North Lakes, QLD.

Common questions

Will Anti Red harm my clean-up crew?

It is formulated to be safe for invertebrates when dosed at the rate printed on the pack. As with any water treatment, dose accurately and watch sensitive species during the first course.

Do I need to do a water change first?

No – dose it into the system as directed. A water change after treatment, once the cyanobacteria has cleared, helps remove the nutrients that fed the bloom in the first place.

Why does my carbon need to come out?

Activated carbon adsorbs the active compound before it can act on the cyanobacteria, so treatment fails quietly if carbon is left running.

What size do I need?

Match the pack to your system volume and how many treatment courses you expect to run – the 1000 mL pack works out cheaper per treatment on larger or recurring outbreaks.
