Exo Terra Automatic Turtle Feeder
Four programmable meals a day, so the turtle eats on schedule whether you are home or not. The Exo Terra Automatic Turtle Feeder (PT3815) is a battery-powered pellet dispenser that clamps to the rim of a turtle terrarium or aquarium and drops a measured portion at up to four set times each day. Its chamber holds 200 mL of pellets and the portion size is adjustable, so it suits a single hatchling as readily as a pair of adults. It runs on two AA batteries, which are not supplied.
Key features
- Up to four feeding times a day – each one set independently, so you can split a daily ration into smaller meals rather than one large drop.
- Adjustable portion size – a controller on the dispensing door sets how much comes out per feed, matched to how many turtles you keep and how big they are.
- 200 mL pellet chamber – enough capacity to cover a stretch away without refilling.
- Clear cap – you can see the pellet level at a glance instead of opening the unit to check.
- Manual feed button – dispenses on demand, which is also how you test the portion setting before trusting it.
- Takes round and stick pellets – not just one proprietary shape.
- Rim clamp up to 24.5 mm – fits Exo Terra Turtle Terrariums and most aquariums with a rim inside that width.
- Cuts overfeeding – a measured portion means fewer uneaten pellets breaking down and fouling the water, which is the usual cause of a cloudy turtle tank.

Will it fit my tank?
The deciding measurement is the rim, not the tank volume. The clamp accepts a rim up to 24.5 mm (1 inch) wide. Measure the top edge your tank actually has – the plastic or glass lip the feeder will grip – and check it against that figure before ordering.
It is designed around Exo Terra Turtle Terrariums and fits most aquariums within that rim width. Rimless tanks, tanks with a wide bracing bar along the top, and tanks with a fixed full-length hood are the three cases where it will not clamp.
The feeder needs to sit over open water so the pellets land where the turtle feeds, not on a basking platform or a dry ledge.
Setting it up
Fit the batteries first, then set the clock. Press SET once and use the HR and MIN buttons to enter the current time.
Press SET again to program Feeding Time 1, using the same HR and MIN buttons. Repeat for Feeding Times 2, 3 and 4 if you want them. Press SET until the symbols stop blinking to confirm.
Then test it. Use the manual feed button a few times over a couple of days and watch what the turtle actually clears, adjusting the portion controller until nothing is left after ten minutes. Do that before you rely on it while you are away, not after.
How much to feed
Exo Terra's guidance is that aquatic turtles typically eat one to two times a day, and that a meal should be finished within five to ten minutes. Anything still floating after that was too much.
Uneaten pellets are the reason turtle water goes cloudy and smells. Remove and discard leftovers rather than letting them break down in the tank.
Four feeding slots are there for flexibility, not because four meals a day is a target. Most keepers use one or two and leave the rest unset.
What's included
- Turtle feeder unit with clamp bracket
- Clear pellet chamber cap
Not included
- Batteries. It needs two AA cells and none are supplied. Order them with the feeder or it will not run out of the box.
- Food. Fill it with a pellet sized for your turtle – hatchling, juvenile or adult floating pellets.
- A tank, basking platform or filter. This is a feeder only.
Suitable for, and not suitable for
Suitable for
- Aquatic turtles fed on round or stick pellets
- Keeping a consistent feeding time when your own hours are not consistent
- Short absences – a weekend away, a work trip
- Portion discipline on a turtle that would happily be overfed
- Tanks with a rim up to 24.5 mm wide
Not suitable for
- Frozen, fresh, gel or freeze-dried foods – it dispenses dry pellets only
- Flake food, which bridges and clogs rather than dropping cleanly
- Rimless tanks, or tanks with a top brace or fixed hood the clamp cannot grip
- Long absences without someone checking in. Water quality, temperature and the animal itself still need eyes on them
- Replacing a varied diet. Pellets are a base, not the whole of it
- Outdoor ponds or any wet-exposed position
Care and maintenance
Clean the chamber and the dispensing door regularly, and dry both thoroughly before refilling. Damp pellets clump, and a clumped chamber is the failure mode that leaves a turtle unfed on the day you are not there to notice.
Keep the unit clear of splashing and condensation. It is not water resistant.
Remove the batteries whenever the feeder is going to sit unused for a while. Exo Terra excludes damage caused by leaking batteries from its warranty, and a leak inside the housing usually ends the unit.
Safety
Indoor use only. Disconnect any electrical equipment in or around the tank before you put your hands in the water or service the feeder, and make sure no part of the feeder is wet when you change the batteries.
Goes well with
- Exo Terra Turtle Food Adult Floating Pellets – a round floating pellet, the shape the feeder is built around.
- Exo Terra Turtle Food Juvenile Floating Pellets – the smaller grade for growing turtles.
- Exo Terra Turtle Bank – a floating basking platform, so the turtle has somewhere dry to haul out between meals.
- Exo Terra Turtle Habitat Cleaning Kit – for the water changes that automatic feeding does not remove the need for.
Warranty and delivery
Exo Terra's manufacturer warranty excludes damage caused by leaking batteries. Your rights under the Australian Consumer Law apply regardless, and any manufacturer warranty sits in addition to them – the feeder must be of acceptable quality and fit for the purpose it is sold for.
It ships as a standard parcel. Not oversize, not dangerous goods, no cold chain.
Common questions
How many days will one filling of the Exo Terra Turtle Feeder last?
That depends entirely on your portion setting and how many feeds a day you have programmed, and Exo Terra publishes no runtime figure. The way to know is to fill the 200 mL chamber, run your actual settings for a week, and see how far the level drops.
Does it come with batteries?
No. It takes two AA batteries and they are not included, so add them to the order if you do not have spares.
Can I use flake food or freeze-dried food in it?
No. It is built for round and stick pellets. Flake bridges across the opening and freeze-dried foods crumble, and both will jam the dispensing door.
Will it fit a standard glass aquarium?
It fits most aquariums with a rim up to 24.5 mm (1 inch) wide. Measure the top lip of your tank – rimless tanks and tanks with a wide top brace or a fixed hood are the ones it cannot clamp to.
Can I leave my turtle with it for a two-week holiday?
The feeder will keep dispensing, but food is only one of the things a turtle needs watched. Water quality, heating, lighting and the animal's own condition still need someone checking every few days, so arrange that separately for absences of more than a few days.
Does it need to be plugged in?
No. It runs on two AA batteries and needs no mains outlet, which also means it keeps feeding through a power cut.
