Fluval AC50 Zeo Carb Insert 3 Pack
Pulls ammonia out without adding phosphate back in. This is the genuine Fluval Zeo-Carb insert for the AquaClear 50 (AC50) power filter, part 19653, supplied as a pack of three 90 g bags (270 g total). It's a chemical-stage swap for the Clear-Carb insert, aimed at ammonia rather than general water polish.
Key features
- Genuine Fluval part 19653 – sized to the AC50's chemical media slot, same position as Clear-Carb.
- Zeolite and activated carbon combined – zeolite adsorbs ammonia directly; carbon handles odour and discolouration alongside it.
- Won't raise phosphate – the point of difference from a carbon-and-resin blend, which matters on a planted or reef tank where phosphate is already being managed.
- Three-pack – covers three monthly changes without a mid-cycle reorder.

Suitable for, and not suitable for
Suitable for a freshwater tank carrying an ammonia load – new setups still cycling, a recent stocking increase, or a spike after a filter clean.
Not suitable for marine or reef tanks – the same exchange sites that bind ammonia in freshwater are largely saturated by the salts in saltwater, so the media has little effect there. Also not suitable for a tank being actively dosed with a medication that needs to stay in the water column – pull the bag before dosing, same as any carbon-based media.
Care and maintenance
Replace one bag every 4 weeks. Zeolite's ammonia capacity is fixed – once saturated it stops adsorbing, so there's no benefit to leaving a spent bag in place.
Goes well with
- Clear-Carb insert for AC50 – swap back in once ammonia is under control and general polishing is the priority
- BioMax insert for AC50 – the biological stage that takes over ammonia control long-term
- Bio-Foam insert for AC50 – the mechanical stage ahead of it

Common questions
When should I use Zeo-Carb instead of Clear-Carb?
When ammonia is the immediate concern – a new tank still cycling, or a spike after a stocking change or a heavy clean. Clear-Carb is the better everyday choice once ammonia is stable.
Does Zeo-Carb replace the need for BioMax?
No. Zeolite is a stop-gap while the tank's own bacteria colony, which lives mainly on BioMax and the foam insert, catches up. It doesn't replace biological filtration long-term.
Will it raise phosphate like some chemical media does?
No – Fluval states it will not raise phosphate levels, which is the reason to choose it over a generic carbon-and-resin blend on a planted or reef tank.
