Hikari Micro Pellets
A micro pellet sized for mouths too small for standard flake or pellet food. Hikari Micro Pellets is a semi-floating, slow-sinking diet built around a 43% protein base, designed for bettas, tetras, barbs and other small-mouthed tropical fish that struggle with full-size pellets.
The pellet holds its shape in the water rather than dissolving into cloud, so fish get a chance to find and eat it before it breaks down, and it comes in three pack sizes to suit anything from a single betta bowl to a busy community tank.
Key features
- Small pellet diameter – sized for fish with small mouths that cannot manage standard pellets or wafers.
- 43% crude protein minimum – a high-protein base suited to active, growing tropical fish.
- Semi-floating, slow-sinking – stays available at the surface and mid-water, so surface and mid-water feeders can both reach it.
- Holds its shape in water – resists breaking down into cloudy debris before fish finish it.
- Colour-supporting recipe – includes spirulina and astaxanthin, which support natural colouration.

Feeding directions
Feed two to three times daily, only as much as fish will fully consume within about a minute. For bettas, Hikari's guide is around six pellets in the morning and six at night, adjusted as the fish grows. Remove uneaten food rather than letting it sit, since overfeeding is the most common cause of poor water quality in small tanks.
Suitable for, and not suitable for
- Suitable for: bettas, tetras, barbs, rasboras and other small-mouthed community fish.
- Not suitable for: larger cichlids, oscars or other big-mouthed fish that will out-eat the small pellet size without real benefit – a standard pellet is better value for them.
Goes well with
- A sinking wafer or algae wafer for tanks that also carry bottom feeders, so food reaches every level of the tank.
- A slow feeder or auto-feeder for bettas kept alone, to help portion control between feeds.
- A quality water conditioner, so leftover food doesn't compound into a water quality issue in a small volume.
Warranty and delivery
Sold with the manufacturer's standard shelf life when stored in a cool, dry place with the bag sealed between feeds, in addition to your rights under Australian Consumer Law. Standard parcel delivery Australia-wide; no cold-chain requirement.
Common questions
Will my betta eat Micro Pellets?
Yes – Micro Pellets is one of the standard diets Hikari markets specifically for bettas, alongside tetras and other small-mouthed tropical fish, and the semi-floating pellet suits a betta's small upward-facing mouth.
Does it cloud the water?
It holds its shape rather than dissolving, so cloudiness is minimal if you feed only what fish finish within a minute or two and remove any leftover food.
Can I feed it to bottom-dwelling fish?
It is semi-floating and slow-sinking, so some will reach lower levels of the tank, but a dedicated sinking wafer is a better primary diet for bottom feeders.
Which pack size should I buy?
The 22 g pack suits a single betta or small nano tank; the 45 g and 80 g packs suit busier community tanks or multiple bettas, since unopened Hikari food keeps well when stored correctly.
