Hikari Mini Algae Wafers
A vegetable-based wafer sized for smaller algae eaters that struggle with full-size algae wafers. Hikari Mini Algae Wafers is a sinking, plant-forward diet built around fish meal, seaweed and alfalfa, aimed at smaller plecostomus, other algae-eating bottom feeders, marine herbivorous grazers, snails and crustaceans.
Standard algae wafers are often too large for smaller mouths to work at efficiently; this mini size keeps the same nutrition in a wafer that smaller fish and invertebrates can actually eat.
Key features
- Mini sinking wafer, approximately 6.5–7.5 mm diameter – sized down from a standard algae wafer for smaller-bodied grazers.
- Vegetable-forward recipe – built on seaweed meal, alfalfa and spirulina alongside a fish meal base.
- Suits freshwater and marine grazers – smaller plecos and algae eaters, plus marine herbivorous grazers, snails and crustaceans.
- Designed for evening feeding – matches the nocturnal feeding pattern of most algae-eating fish.

Feeding directions
Feed no more than fish and invertebrates will fully consume within about two hours. Because most algae-eating fish feed at night, offer this wafer late in the day or in the evening rather than first thing in the morning, and remove any uneaten portion after the feeding period to avoid clouding the water.
Suitable for, and not suitable for
- Suitable for: smaller plecostomus and other algae-eating bottom feeders, marine herbivorous grazers, snails and crustaceans.
- Not suitable for: large plecos or heavy grazers that need more food per feed than a mini wafer delivers efficiently – a standard-size algae wafer is better value there.
Goes well with
- Hikari Micro Wafers or Micro Pellets, so surface and mid-water fish in the same tank aren't left competing for this bottom-feeder food.
- A wafer clip or feeding dish, to hold the wafer in place against filter flow until it's eaten.
- A gravel vacuum, to lift any uneaten wafer out of the substrate.
Warranty and delivery
Sold with the manufacturer's standard shelf life when stored in a cool, dry place with the bag sealed between feeds, in addition to your rights under Australian Consumer Law. Standard parcel delivery Australia-wide; no cold-chain requirement.
Common questions
Will this sink fast enough for my pleco?
Yes – it's formulated as a sinking wafer, so it reaches the substrate where plecos and other bottom feeders graze, rather than staying at the surface.
Can I feed this to snails and shrimp as well as fish?
Yes – Hikari markets Mini Algae Wafers for snails and crustaceans alongside algae-eating fish, so it works in mixed clean-up crew tanks.
Why is the pack size for this line noticeably smaller than a standard algae wafer pack?
The mini format is aimed at smaller grazers that eat less per feed than a full-size pleco, so packs are sized to match typical usage rather than bulk feeding.
Does it work in a marine tank as well as freshwater?
Yes – the manufacturer lists marine herbivorous grazers alongside freshwater algae eaters as suitable species for this wafer.
