Java Reef Base Rock Per Kg
Dry reef rock built to be the footprint, not the feature. Java Reef Base Rock is dry, hand-manufactured aquascaping rock sold per kilogram, sized and shaped to form the underlying structure of a marine aquascape. Made from natural, sustainable, reef-safe material rather than harvested ocean rock, it won't leach phosphate or nitrate and carries no die-off risk, because it's never been alive. Suited to marine and reef tanks as the base layer that branching pieces, arches and corals sit on.
Key features
- Structural base rock – irregular chunks sized to build the load-bearing footprint an aquascape sits on, before branching or arch pieces go on top.
- Dry, not live – hand-manufactured from natural, sustainable, reef-safe material, so there's no curing cycle or die-off smell to manage before stocking.
- pH-neutral – won't leach phosphate or nitrate into the water column, and comes free of hitchhiking parasites.
- Porous and lightweight – easier to handle and build a tall, stable structure without loading the tank base with excess weight.
- Sold per kilogram – order the quantity that matches how much of the footprint you're building.

How much do I need?
Java Reef Rock doesn't publish a fixed kilograms-per-litre figure, and how much you need depends on how dense a look you're after. As a general guide used across the hobby, a fully rock-scaped tank has traditionally worked out to roughly 0.12–0.24 kg of dry rock per litre of tank volume – the old "1–2 lb per US gallon" rule. Many aquascapers now go lighter, starting with a flat 4.5–9 kg of structural base and branching rock regardless of tank size and letting it fill in over time, rather than building a solid wall of rock. Because pieces are natural and irregular, expect some to weigh over a kilogram each, so a small order may only be a few rocks.
Suitable for, and not suitable for
- Suitable for marine and reef aquascaping as a base layer, and for anyone building a new tank who wants to avoid the cost and biological load of shipping true harvested live rock.
- Not a substitute for live rock's built-in bacterial colony – pair it with a small amount of live rock, live sand or a bottled bacterial culture if the tank needs to cycle quickly, since dry rock alone starts with no biological colonisation.
Which grade do I need?
| Grade | Shape | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Base Rock | Irregular structural chunks | The main footprint and load-bearing base of the aquascape |
| Branching Reef Rock | Branch- and finger-like pieces | Open, coral-friendly structures with plenty of flow-through gaps |
| Reef Arches | Natural arch and overhang formations | Caves, swim-throughs and shaded overhangs |
| Reef Plates | Flat, shelf-like pieces | Ledges, terracing and shallow coral placement |
Care and maintenance
No ongoing maintenance beyond normal aquascape care. Unlike live rock, there's no die-off period to watch for after adding it to the tank.
Warranty and delivery
Covered by the standard consumer guarantees under Australian Consumer Law, in addition to any manufacturer assurance. Sold by weight, so freight cost scales with the kilograms ordered.
Common questions
Is Java Reef Base Rock the same as live rock?
No – it's dry, never-been-alive rock manufactured from natural, sustainable material. It becomes biologically active over time once it's in a cycled tank, the same way any dry rock does, but it doesn't need curing first.
Do I need to cure it before adding it to my tank?
No – because it's never held living tissue, there's no die-off smell or ammonia spike to manage. A quick rinse to clear handling dust is enough.
Will it raise my phosphate or nitrate?
The manufacturer states the material is pH-neutral and doesn't leach phosphate or nitrate.
How much should I order for a new tank?
See "How much do I need?" above – it depends on the look you're after, from a light scatter of a few kilograms to a fully rock-scaped structure at roughly 0.12–0.24 kg per litre of tank volume.
Can I mix Base Rock with the other Java Reef Rock grades?
Yes – Base, Branching, Arches and Plates are designed to be combined; Base typically forms the footprint the other shapes build on.
