NanoMat Drive Unit & Sensor
The part that makes a NanoMat automatic rather than manual. This is genuine Red Sea part R35493, the NanoMat drive unit and water level sensor supplied as one assembly. The sensor watches the water level inside the filter chamber; when the fleece blinds and the level rises past the trigger point, the drive unit winds fresh fleece off the roll. If your NanoMat has stopped advancing on its own, is advancing constantly, or has started overflowing the chamber, this is the assembly that fixes it.
Key features
- Genuine Red Sea R35493 – drive motor and sensor together, as Red Sea supplies them; they are not sold separately for the NanoMat.
- Dual-level solid-state sensor – one level triggers the fleece advance, a second level 1 cm higher acts as an overflow safeguard when the return pump is off.
- Timed advance logic – a five second delay before it moves, and a minimum thirty seconds between consecutive advances, so surface turbulence does not trigger a runaway roll.
- No fleece wasted on false triggers – the roll only moves when the chamber genuinely backs up.

Will it fit my NanoMat?
R35493 is the drive unit and sensor for the NanoMat, whichever sump the NanoMat is sitting in. Red Sea lists the NanoMat itself as fitting the MAX Nano 2G rear sump, Reefer sumps, and standalone sumps where it replaces four standard 4 inch filter socks using the adapter ring.
It is not a ReefMat part. The ReefMat 250, 500 and 1200 use different drive units and a separately sold sensor, so do not order R35493 for those.
Which NanoMat part do I need?
| Symptom | Likely part |
|---|---|
| Fleece never advances, or advances constantly | Drive unit & sensor – R35493 (this listing) |
| Roll has run out | NanoMat fleece roll, 2 pack – R35443 |
| Shafts damaged or roll will not seat | Take-up and dispensing shafts – R35496 |
| Chamber cracked or crazed | NanoMat filter chamber – R35495 |
| Body damaged | NanoMat body – R35494 |
| Inlet tray damaged | NanoMat inlet tray – R35498 |
| Fitting into a 4 inch filter sock holder | Filter sock adapter ring – R35497 |
| No power at all | NanoMat power supply – R35499 |
Suitable for, and not suitable for
Suitable for: any Red Sea NanoMat whose fleece advance has stopped, become erratic, or is overflowing the chamber.
Not suitable for: the ReefMat 250, 500 or 1200, any non-Red Sea roller filter, or a NanoMat whose only fault is an empty fleece roll.
What's included
- One Red Sea NanoMat drive unit and sensor assembly, part R35493
Not included: fleece roll, take-up and dispensing shafts, filter chamber, body, inlet tray, power supply and adapter ring. Each of those is a separate Red Sea part number, listed in the table above.
Care and maintenance
Keep the sensor face free of salt creep and biofilm. A film across the sensor is the most common reason a NanoMat starts advancing when it should not, and it usually cleans off with a soft cloth and fresh water.
Unplug the power supply before removing the drive unit, and let the assembly dry before refitting.
Goes well with
- Red Sea NanoMat – the complete unit, if yours is beyond a single part.
- Red Sea NanoMat Fleece Roll, 2 pack – the consumable this drive unit winds.
- Red Sea Nano ReefMat Fleece Roll, 2 pack – alternative roll listing.
- Red Sea MAX Nano Thin Mesh Filter 225 Micron – for MAX Nano owners not running a roller.
- Red Sea MAX Nano Cube G2 – the system the NanoMat was designed around.
- Red Sea Marine Care Multi Test Kit – check nutrients after a spell of poor mechanical filtration.
Safety
The drive unit runs on 12 V DC from the NanoMat's own power supply. Use only the Red Sea power supply supplied with the unit, and mount the supply above the water line with a drip loop in the cable.
Warranty and delivery
Any manufacturer warranty Red Sea offers on this part applies in addition to your rights under the Australian Consumer Law, which are not limited or excluded by it.
Ships as a standard small parcel. No oversize or dangerous goods handling applies.
Common questions
What is the Red Sea part number for the NanoMat drive unit and sensor?
The Red Sea part number is R35493, listed in the NanoMat manual as the drive unit and sensor. The two components are supplied together as one assembly.
My NanoMat keeps advancing the fleece even when the tank is clean. Is this the part?
Usually not straight away. Clean the sensor face first, because salt creep or biofilm across the sensor will read as a high water level. If the fleece still advances on a clean sensor, R35493 is the assembly to replace.
Will this fit a Red Sea ReefMat 250, 500 or 1200?
No. The ReefMat models use different drive units, and their sensor is a separate part. R35493 is listed for the NanoMat only.
Do I need to shut the tank down to fit it?
Only the NanoMat. Unplug its power supply, lift the drive unit out, fit the replacement and plug back in. The display tank keeps running, though the chamber will pass unfiltered water while the unit is out.
