Zoo Med Reptile Hut Half Log

A log-look hide that's actually ceramic, so it can go in water or on land without falling apart. The Zoo Med Reptile Hut Half Log is a half-log-shaped shelter made from an inert ceramic material rather than real wood – Zoo Med states it will not mould, is easy to sterilise, and can be fully submerged, so the same hide works in an aquatic turtle tank or on dry land in a reptile or amphibian terrarium.

Key features
  • Ceramic, not real wood – despite the natural log look, this is an inert fired material. It won't rot, mould, or soak up odours the way real wood or cork can.
  • Fully submersible – safe as an underwater or half-in-half-out hide for aquatic turtles, newts and fish, as well as a dry-land hide for reptiles and amphibians.
  • Easy to sterilise – wipes clean and can be disinfected between animals, unlike a porous natural hide.
  • Doubles as a basking or climbing surface – the curved top gives a raised perch as well as shelter underneath.
  • Four sizes – Small through X-Large, so you can size the opening to the animal rather than leaving it in an oversized hide.

Sizes available Small, Medium, Large, X-Large

Zoo Med does not publish exact centimetre dimensions per size for this model on the sources we could verify, so we haven't guessed at numbers here – as a rule of thumb, pick the size your animal can back into snugly, since a tight hide feels safer to a reptile or amphibian than a roomy one.

Which size do I need?

Small suits juveniles and small geckos or frogs; Medium suits adult geckos, small skinks and similar-sized amphibians; Large suits adult bearded dragons, larger skinks and small aquatic turtles; X-Large suits large lizards and bigger aquatic turtles. If in doubt, size up slightly for animals still growing, since ceramic hides don't compress or wear the way a foam or cork hide would.

Suitable for, and not suitable for

Suitable for reptiles, amphibians, aquatic turtles, newts and ornamental fish, in both wet and dry enclosures. Not suitable as a sole hide for burrowing species that need to dig their own shelter, and not intended as a heat-safe surface directly beneath a heat bulb – check clearance from any heat or UVB source before placing it under one.

Care and maintenance

Wash and disinfect between uses or when moving between animals. Being ceramic, it can be scrubbed and disinfected with reptile-safe products without breaking down the way real wood or resin hides can.

Warranty and delivery

Sold as a decor item; no warranty applies. Standard shipping – a solid ceramic piece, so larger sizes are heavier to ship than they look.

Common questions

Is this real wood?

No – despite the bark-like look, Zoo Med makes this from a ceramic material, not timber. That's what lets it go underwater without rotting.

Can I put this in my turtle tank?

Yes – it's fully submersible and works as an aquatic basking and hiding spot for turtles as well as a dry hide for terrestrial reptiles and amphibians.

Will it grow mould in a humid terrarium?

Zoo Med states the ceramic material resists mould, unlike natural wood or cork hides, which can need replacing once they start to break down.

How do I clean it?

Wipe down or scrub with water, and it can be disinfected more thoroughly than a porous natural hide since the material itself doesn't absorb moisture or waste.
