Bioscape 2000L/h Canister Replacement Carbon Cartridge (1 Pack)
The 2000 takes two carbon packs, and this page sells one.
This is the genuine BIS542B activated carbon pack for the Bioscape PRO Easy Clean Canister Filter 2000 L/h – the BIS542, rated for aquariums up to 600 litres with an 11.0 litre media capacity. Carbon is the chemical filtration stage. Bioscape's service instruction for the PRO range is to replace fine wool and carbon every 4 to 6 weeks.
How many packs do I actually need?
This is the question that catches people out on the 2000 L/h canister, and it is worth answering before you order.
Bioscape supplies the BIS542 with two activated carbon packs. The smaller 1050 and 1620 L/h canisters are each supplied with one. BIS542B is sold as a single pack, so replacing the carbon in a 2000 L/h canister completely means ordering two of them, not one.
| Canister | Carbon packs supplied with the filter | Packs needed for a full refill |
|---|---|---|
| PRO Easy Clean 1050 L/h (BIS540) | 1 | 1 x BIS540B |
| PRO Easy Clean 1620 L/h (BIS541) | 1 | 1 x BIS541B |
| PRO Easy Clean 2000 L/h (BIS542) | 2 | 2 x BIS542B – this page |
Running the canister with a single pack is not harmful, but you are then running half the chemical capacity Bioscape designed into the filter, on the largest tank in the range. If your intention is to strip tannins or clear medication residue out of 600 litres, the half-loaded canister will take proportionally longer to do it.
What carbon does, and what it does not
Carbon gives no visual sign of exhaustion. It looks identical at week one and week ten, which is why Bioscape publishes the interval as a calendar figure rather than an inspection.
- What it removes: dissolved organic compounds, the yellow tint that creeps into an established tank, tannins from driftwood, odours, chlorine, and medication residue after a treatment course.
- What it does not touch: ammonia, nitrite and nitrate. Those belong to the biological media – the ceramic noodles and bio-balls further down the stack.
- What it will not fix: green water, algae on the glass, or pH. Carbon is not a clarifier and not a buffer.

Which PRO canister do I have?
The three PRO canisters differ in body size, media capacity and hose size, so their media packs do not interchange. The 2000 L/h is the odd one out in a way that is easy to miss: it is the only model in the range on 19/25 mm hose, so unlike the other two, neither its media nor its plumbing swaps with anything else in the family.
| Filter | Flow | Tanks up to | Media capacity | Carbon pack | Hose |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| PRO Easy Clean Canister 1050 L/h (BIS540) | 1,050 L/h | 250 L | 6.5 L | BIS540B | 16/22 mm |
| PRO Easy Clean Canister 1620 L/h (BIS541) | 1,620 L/h | 400 L | 9.0 L | BIS541B | 16/22 mm |
| PRO Easy Clean Canister 2000 L/h (BIS542) | 2,000 L/h | 600 L | 11.0 L | BIS542B – this page | 19/25 mm |
The model code is printed on the label on the canister body. BIS542B does not fit the Bioscape Tropic canisters, the Bioscape Stainless Steel canisters or any Bioscape hang-on filter.
Which BIS542 media do I need?
The 2000 L/h canister runs three replaceable media packs on two different schedules. This page covers the chemical stage only.
| Code | Pack contents | Stage | Bioscape's service instruction |
|---|---|---|---|
| BIS542A | 2 white fine wool pads, 1 blue foam/wool pad | Fine mechanical | Replace fine wool every 4 to 6 weeks |
| BIS542B (this page) | 1 activated carbon pack | Chemical | Replace every 4 to 6 weeks |
| BIS542C | 4 pre-filter foams | Coarse mechanical, 1.0 L pre-filter chamber | Rinse monthly |
The BIS542 is also supplied with two ceramic noodle packs and two bio-ball packs. Those are not on a replacement schedule at all – Bioscape's instruction for them is to clean them gently in aquarium water.
Suitable for, and not suitable for
Suitable for
- The Bioscape PRO Easy Clean Canister Filter 2000 L/h, freshwater or marine
- Clearing tannins after adding a large piece of driftwood to a 500 to 600 litre display
- Stripping medication residue once a treatment course has finished
- Lifting the yellow cast out of a mature, heavily stocked tank
Not suitable for
- The 1050 L/h or 1620 L/h PRO canisters – use BIS540B or BIS541B
- Bioscape Tropic canisters, Stainless Steel canisters or hang-on filters
- Running while medicating – see the warning below
- Blackwater and botanical setups, where removing tannins defeats the aquascape
Safety and important warnings
- Remove the carbon before you medicate. Activated carbon adsorbs most aquarium medications and can strip a full dose out of the water within hours. On this filter that means pulling out both packs, not one. Take them out before starting a course, then fit fresh carbon afterwards to clear the residue.
- Rinse each pack before fitting. A brief rinse clears carbon dust that would otherwise cloud a 600 litre display when the canister restarts.
- Do not leave spent packs in the stack. Exhausted carbon adsorbs nothing while occupying space in an 11.0 litre basket that could be holding working media.
- Switch the filter off at the wall before opening it. This is a 240 V mains-powered canister with a 300 W integrated heater, and a heater exposed to air while powered can crack.
Care and maintenance
- Order in pairs. A full carbon change on this canister is two packs. Buying one at a time is the most common way people end up running the filter half-loaded for a month.
- Buy it with the fine wool. BIS542A and BIS542B share the same 4 to 6 week interval, so one service handles both stages.
- Date it. Carbon gives no visual cue at all. Write the fitting date on the canister lid or in your maintenance notes.
- Leave the biological media alone. The two ceramic noodle packs and two bio-ball packs hold your bacterial colony. Changing carbon should not disturb them.
- Continuous carbon is a choice, not a requirement. Many keepers run it only after medicating, after adding new wood, or when the water starts to yellow. A heavily planted 600 litre tank running without carbon is entirely normal.
Goes well with
- Bioscape 2000L/h Canister Sponges (BIS542A) – same 4 to 6 week interval, so hold both and service the canister once.
- Bioscape 2000L/h Canister Pre-Filter Foam 4 Pack (BIS542C) – the coarse stage that keeps debris off the carbon, so it is spent by dissolved organics rather than clogged with muck.
- Bioscape Premium Carbon Pouches – loose pouched carbon for running an extra chemical stage or a short course in a quarantine tank.
- Bioscape Replace Canister Seal Ring – worth having on hand before a media change, since a perished lid seal is the usual cause of a leak after servicing.
- Bioscape PRO Easy Clean Canister Filter with Heater – the filter range this pack is cut for.
Warranty and delivery
Bioscape warrants the PRO canister filters for 2 years. Filter media is a consumable and is not covered by that term. Your rights under the Australian Consumer Law apply to this product and are not limited by any manufacturer's warranty. Ships as a standard parcel.
Common questions
How many BIS542B packs does the 2000 L/h canister take?
Two. Bioscape supplies the BIS542 canister with two activated carbon packs, and BIS542B is sold as a single pack, so a complete carbon change means ordering two. This differs from the 1050 and 1620 L/h models, which are each supplied with one carbon pack.
How often should the BIS542B carbon be replaced?
Bioscape specifies replacing fine wool and carbon every 4 to 6 weeks across the PRO canister range. Carbon shows no visual sign of exhaustion, so the change is made on the calendar rather than on appearance. A pack left in for months occupies media space without adsorbing anything.
Will BIS542B fit my 1050 or 1620 L/h Bioscape canister?
No. The 1050 L/h BIS540 takes BIS540B and the 1620 L/h BIS541 takes BIS541B. The 2000 L/h is the largest body in the range, with 11.0 litres of media capacity against 6.5 and 9.0 litres, and its media is cut accordingly.
Does activated carbon remove medication from the tank?
Yes, and it is the most common reason a treatment appears to fail. Carbon adsorbs most aquarium medications, frequently within hours of dosing. Remove both packs before starting a course, then fit fresh carbon once the course is finished to clear the leftover residue.
Can I run the canister with only one carbon pack?
Yes, it will do no harm. You are simply running half the chemical capacity the filter was designed around, so tannins, odours and medication residue in a tank of up to 600 litres will take longer to clear. For general maintenance one pack is workable; for a specific job, fit both.
Can I recharge or reuse the carbon pack?
No. Baking, boiling or rinsing spent aquarium carbon does not restore its adsorption capacity. Once the adsorption sites are occupied they stay occupied, and the pack should be replaced.
