Fluval Breeder Box 1.1L
A hang-on nursery that isolates fry, new arrivals or an injured fish without setting up a separate tank. The Fluval Breeder Box clips onto the outside of your aquarium and uses your existing water, so there's no separate heater or filter to run. Powered by an air pump, it keeps water circulating gently through the 1.1 L chamber while keeping its occupant safe from tankmates.
Key features
- Hatchery and incubator – protects newborn fry from being eaten by tankmates, improving survival rates.
- Doubles as a hospital box – gives an injured, weak or newly acclimating fish a safe, separate space using the main tank's own water.
- V-shape separator included – divides the chamber, useful for keeping a livebearer separate from fry she's already dropped.
- No heater or filter needed – draws on the main tank's temperature and water quality.
- Fits most tanks – two slit plates cover both frameless glass and framed aquariums with a rim.

What's included / what you'll still need
Included: breeding box with cover, intake tube, V-shape separator, levelling adjuster, air valve, 12" airline tube, discharge cap, intake extension, O-ring, strainer, and two slit plates for different frame thicknesses.
Not included: an air pump. Fluval specifies one delivering around 1 L of flow per minute, such as its own Q.5 (Item A849) or A101 (Item A851), plus airline tubing (Item A1141) if you don't already have spare line.
Will it fit my tank?
The box uses one of two included slit plates to clip on – one sized for frameless tanks with 5–10 mm glass, the other for framed tanks with a rim up to 45 mm. Outside the tank, it needs roughly 16.5 x 12.5 x 12 cm of clearance to sit level against the glass.
Suitable for, and not suitable for
Suitable for isolating fry, a stressed or injured fish, or a new arrival that needs to acclimate gradually, in freshwater or saltwater. Not a substitute for a proper hospital or grow-out tank over the longer term – at 1.1 L it's a short-to-medium-term holding space, not permanent housing.
Care and maintenance
Keep the air pump running continuously to maintain circulation through the chamber. Because the box shares the main tank's water, an ordinary partial water change on the display tank keeps water quality inside the box in step with it.
Warranty and delivery
Covered by Fluval's standard consumer guarantee against manufacturing defects, in addition to your rights under Australian Consumer Law. Standard freight class.
Common questions
Does it come with an air pump?
No – Fluval specifies a pump delivering around 1 L of flow per minute, such as its Q.5 (A849) or A101 (A851), sold separately.
Will it fit a rimless tank?
Yes, provided the glass is between 5 and 10 mm thick – the box includes a slit plate sized for frameless glass in that range.
Can I keep fry and an adult fish in it at the same time?
The included V-shape separator lets you split the chamber, so you can house fry away from an adult in the same box.
