Flipper Edge 12mm

A floating magnetic cleaner rated to 12 mm of glass or acrylic, with swap-in blades for both. The Flipper Edge holds an outer handle against the tank while an inner pad tracks it from inside, scrubbing algae with a reversible pad on one face and scraping it with a reversible blade on the other. It suits glass or acrylic panes up to 12 mm (1/2 in) thick in freshwater or marine tanks, and the inner half floats free if it ever separates from the handle, rather than dropping onto the substrate. Two 316 stainless steel blades and two acrylic-safe plastic blades are included, so the same tool works safely on both tank materials.

Key features
  • Rated to 12 mm (1/2 in) glass or acrylic – measure your pane before ordering; a thicker pane will pull the inner half loose.
  • Floats if separated – the inner pad rises to the surface rather than falling to the substrate, so a knock doesn't mean fishing it out of the gravel.
  • Flip-to-scrape handle – rotate the outer handle to switch between the scrubbing pad and the blade, without swapping tools mid-clean.
  • Two blade types included – 316 stainless steel for glass, acrylic-safe plastic for acrylic, both available in flat and serrated profiles and both reversible for double the working life.
  • Rare earth magnets – hold through the full rated thickness without needing to be pressed hard against the pane.

Will it fit my tank?

Measure the glass or acrylic thickness at the spot you'll be cleaning, not the printed tank spec – some panes are thicker at the base or corners than the sides. The Edge works through up to 12 mm (1/2 in). Most tanks under roughly 200 L are within that range; larger and deeper tanks often step up to 15 mm-plus glass already, so this is worth checking rather than assuming.

What happens if my glass is thicker than 12 mm?

The magnets won't hold reliably and the inner half is likely to slip and drop. Step up to a cleaner rated for thicker panes rather than forcing this one – see the comparison below.

Which Flipper cleaner do I need?
Cleaner Max thickness Best for
Flipper Edge (this listing) 12 mm (1/2 in) Standard glass and acrylic tanks up to roughly 200 L
Flipper Edge 2-in-1 – Standard 12 mm (1/2 in) Same glass rating in the 2-in-1 packaging – pick whichever is in stock
Flipper Edge 2-in-1 – Max 25 mm (1 in) Thicker panes on larger display tanks

We stock two 12 mm-rated Edge cleaners. Both carry the same glass and acrylic rating and the same blade set, so this listing and the 2-in-1 Standard are equivalent on the numbers that matter – stock availability is a reasonable way to choose between them.

Suitable for, and not suitable for

Suitable for: glass and acrylic aquariums up to 12 mm (1/2 in) thick, freshwater or marine, where algae builds up on the viewing panes.

Not suitable for: panes thicker than 12 mm – the Edge 2-in-1 Max is rated to 25 mm (1 in) instead. Also not intended as a substrate rake or for scraping coralline growth off rockwork; it's a glass and acrylic tool.

What's included
  • 1x Flipper Edge cleaner (outer handle and inner pad)
  • 2x reversible 316 stainless steel blades (flat and serrated edges)
  • 2x reversible acrylic-safe plastic blades (flat and serrated edges)
Care and maintenance

Rinse the pad and blades after use to stop salt or algae building up in the hinge. Flipper recommends replacing blades every 3 to 6 months depending on how often the cleaner is used and how abrasive your algae load is – a blade that's gone dull will skate over algae rather than lift it.

Safety

Rare earth magnets are strong enough to pinch skin if the two halves snap together directly, so keep fingers clear when placing or removing the cleaner. Keep away from pacemakers and other magnet-sensitive medical devices, and store away from credit cards and hard drives.

Goes well with
Warranty and delivery

Flipper backs this cleaner with a manufacturer warranty in addition to your rights under the Australian Consumer Law. Contact us with your order details if a blade or magnet fails outside normal wear. It ships as a small parcel item on standard freight.

Common questions

Does the Flipper Edge work on acrylic tanks?

Yes. The acrylic-safe plastic blades are designed specifically for acrylic, where a stainless steel blade could scratch the surface. Use the stainless blades on glass and the plastic blades on acrylic.

What happens if the two halves separate mid-clean?

The inner pad floats rather than sinking, so it comes to the surface instead of dropping to the substrate where it could scratch rockwork or get buried.

How do I switch between scrubbing and scraping?

Rotate the outer handle. One position presents the scrubbing pad to the glass, the other presents the blade.

How often should I replace the blades?

Flipper recommends every 3 to 6 months. A blade that's started to skate over algae instead of lifting it is due for a swap.

Is this the same as the Flipper Edge 2-in-1?

Functionally, yes – both are rated to 12 mm glass or acrylic and include the same blade set. They're listed separately because of packaging; choose whichever is in stock.
