Fluval 07 Filter Canister Case 407

The largest body in the 07 range, available on its own.

This is the genuine Fluval filter canister, part A20198, for the 407 external filter. At 9.2 L it holds a 6 L media stack – more than double the 207 – and it is the part that carries the whole weight of a filter servicing a tank up to 500 L. Replacing the body keeps the motor head, baskets, hoses and AquaStop valve in service.

Key features
  • Genuine Fluval A20198 – published for the 407 alone. Rim diameter, height and clip lugs are moulded to that model.
  • 9.2 L body, 6.0 L media chamber – the largest media volume in the 07 range, and the reason a 407 keeps a heavily stocked tank clear.
  • Restores rated performance – the 407 is published at 930 L/h filter circulation and 2.25 m maximum head, both of which depend on an undistorted body.
  • Freshwater and marine – rated for both, same material either way.
  • No tools – release the side clips, lift the head, transfer the baskets in order.

Will it fit my filter?

Each 07 filter has its own canister part number. There is no shared body in the range, and no backwards compatibility with the 06 series.

Filter Canister part number Canister volume
Fluval 107 A20183 3.9 L
Fluval 207 A20188 5.3 L
Fluval 307 A20193 7.3 L
Fluval 407 A20198 9.2 L

A20198 is the 407 body. It is the tallest of the four at 49 cm assembled, against 42 cm for the 307 which shares its 24 x 18 cm footprint. Fluval does not list A20198 for the 405 or 406.

Which canister case do I need?

Match on the model number moulded into the motor head, or on rated tank capacity.

Filter Aquarium capacity Filter circulation Canister case
107 40–130 L 360 L/h A20183
207 60–220 L 460 L/h A20188
307 90–330 L 780 L/h A20193
407 150–500 L 930 L/h A20198 (this part)
Performance of the host filter

Fluval publishes both a pump output and a filter circulation figure for the 407. They are not the same number and only one of them is useful.

Measurement Fluval 407 figure What it means
Pump output 1,450 L/h Bare pump, empty canister, zero head. Never occurs in a working filter.
Filter circulation 930 L/h Through the loaded media stack. This is the figure to size a tank against.
Maximum head pressure 2.25 m The highest lift the pump can achieve, at which point flow reaches zero.
Wattage at 230–240 V / 50 Hz 20 W The Australian figure. Fluval quotes 23 W at 120 V / 60 Hz.

The gap between 1,450 and 930 L/h is media resistance, and it widens further as foam loads up. A 407 that has drifted well below 930 L/h needs its foam replaced, not a new canister.

What's included
  • 1 x filter canister body for the Fluval 407
Not included

Fluval supplies this as the replacement canister. Each item below has its own Fluval part number and is ordered separately.

  • Motor head – see the 407 motor head.
  • Media baskets and basket cover – the 307/407 basket cover is A20067.
  • Motor head gasket – part A20064 on the 307 and 407.
  • AquaStop valve and hosing – the 407 ships with two AquaStop valves, part A20062.
  • Filter media.
Suitable for, and not suitable for

Suitable for a 407 body that has cracked, split at a clip lug or been damaged in a drop, and for a 407 bought second-hand as a head and plumbing only.

Not suitable for the 107, 207 or 307, for the 405 or 406, or for the FX2, FX4 and FX6. It will not fix low flow, which on a 407 is usually loaded foam, a blocked intake strainer, or a partially closed AquaStop.

Care and maintenance

A full 407 canister holds around 9 L of water and weighs over 10 kg with media. Lift it clear of the cabinet before emptying and never tip it in place – that is how most of these bodies crack.

Rinse in tank water at each service and dry the sealing rim before refitting the head. Keep detergent and hot water away from it, because both embrittle the plastic where the clips bear.

Common questions

Will the Fluval A20198 canister fit a 307?

No. The 407 body is 7 cm taller than the 307 and Fluval publishes a separate part number for each – A20198 for the 407, A20193 for the 307. Neither seals on the other model's motor head.

Does A20198 come with the media baskets?

Fluval lists A20198 as the replacement filter canister, which is the outer body. The baskets, the A20067 basket cover and the 407 motor head all carry their own part numbers and are ordered separately.

Can I fit a 407 canister to a Fluval 406?

Fluval lists A20198 for the 407 only. Some smaller 07 parts such as the A20039 impeller shaft and bushing are published across both the 06 and 07 series, but the canister body is not one of them.

How much does a full 407 canister weigh?

The canister holds 9.2 L, so a loaded and filled 407 is over 10 kg. Plan the lift before you open the cabinet, and empty it into a bucket rather than carrying it to a sink.

Will a new canister restore my flow rate?

Only if the old body was distorted or leaking air. Flow loss on a 407 is far more often loaded foam or a blocked strainer. Clean or replace the media first and re-check before buying a body.
